High-Risk Pregnancy

GD Diet Sample Plan

I am currently 17 weeks pregnant with second child.  I had GD with first child (diagnosed around 28 weeks).  So far I have not tested pos. for GD with this pregnancy but realize that it is more likely as the pregnancy continues - my next test for GD will be at 23 weeks.

I was trying to find my packet of GD info from the last pregnancy and seemed to have misplaced it (we moved).  Can anyone share with me their sample diet/meal plan? I know that doctors often differ on specific plans, but am just trying to find some samples to review and see if they jog my memory from last time.

I will ask my doctor for information at my next appt (Dec 9th) but wanted to get a jump start on eating healthier since I feel I've been carb-loading since Thanksgiving and figured counting carbs again at this point and walking/stationary biking can't hurt.  TIA.

Re: GD Diet Sample Plan

  • My plan this time is totally different from my first son. I remember with him it was alot of protein and veggies, no fruit and cuttting way back on carbs. This time its different. Here is the list they gave me:

    b- 2 proteins, 0-1 veggies, 1 grain/starch, 1 fat/oil  total 15 grams of carbs

snack- 1 fruit,1milk,1 protein  total 30 gms carb

    L- 2 protein,2 veggies,2 grains/starch,2 fats/oils =30 g carbs

    s-1 fruit,1 milk,1protein=30g crabs

    D-2 protein,2 veggies, 2-3 grains/starches, 2 oils/fats= 30-45 g carbs

    s-1 grain/starch,1 milk,1 protain= 30 g carbs

  • Thanks so much!  This is a good starting point until I am able to see the doc.  Last time they even gave me a sample menu and I picked out what I liked to keep it easy - less carb counting... hoping they have something similar this time.. but who knows!  :)
  • They gave me a packet of examples also, i just pick what i liked from it and add my own twist to it. Here is what i typically eat:

b- 1 tortilla, 1 oz cheese melted, 1 egg and i slice bacon

s-6 oz yogurt( low fat yoplait), 1 cup of strawberries, 1/4 cup peanuts

l-tacos:2 oz meats, 2 tortillas, 2 tbs guacamole, 1 tbs salsa, salad with ranch

s-6 oz yogurt, 1 cup of fruit, 2 tbs peanut butter- blended to make a smothie

d-sandwhich:2 oz meat, 2 slices of whole wheat bread, salad with ranch

s- 1/2 cup no sugar added ice cream, 8 oz milk, 2 tbs peanut butter. blended to make a shake.

  • Thanks this reminds me of what I did when I was pregnant.  I am def going to use some off this!
  • Not to contradict your doctor, but accordingly to two different dieticians, GD can "come on" around 26-28 weeks. So restesting at 23 weeks (if they aren't going to test a 3rd time) could possibly miss your GD. You may want to ask your doctor about this.
    Son #1: 12.27.08 (6 years)
    Son #2: 02.06.12 (2.5 yrs)
    Baby #3 due: 02.10.15 (It's a girl!)
    GD with all three pregnancies

  • I have read that as well.  The plan right now is to test me with one hour at 23 and then again 4 weeks later... That's a lot of sugary ick to drink, but I'm glad that they are keeping an eye on it.

I talked to DH last night and we are going to devise our meal plan this weekend so I can go grocery shopping and make sure I have the right dietary stuff for easy meals next week.  I really appreciate everyone's help!
