NBR- sending a present to Afganistan

I posted in June 2012 board too but thought you ladies would be a great source! I am in need of some advice. My younger brother is a Marine and just got deployed to Afganistan last month. He is in BFE building a road (or something like that) with a primitive camp as home, no running water or electricity.... All that good stuff. My sister and I want to send him some stuff but I'm kind of at a loss... Suggestions? Previous experiences? The only thing on the list so far is gummy bears ;)

Re: NBR- sending a present to Afganistan

  • My husband is a Marine and he deployed to Afghan 2 months ago, this is what they all regularly ask for but depending on where your brother is and what he has as an MRE etc he may be different.

Pouch tuna and Chicken (NOTHING PORK they can't have it there)

Ramen noodles and siplock bags (they smash them up mix the flavor in an eat it dry)

canned fruit (make sure it's a pop top can they LOVE this)

instant cofffee (if they don't drink it they use it like chewing tobacco in order to stay awake on long patrols)

    Jerky lot's of jerky

    pringles

    cheese and penut butter crackers

peanut butter in the plastic jar

    dried fruit and trail mix

pop top canned soups (alot of the time they'll eat it cold cuz it taste better than the MRE)

flavor packets for their water (ie gatorade, lemonaid etc)

    hard candy

    gum

    wet wipes or baby wipes

    I hope this helps

  • The poster prior to me should edit her email ASAP since it seems to include her full name, her SN is where she lives, and she's talking about a deployed H. Lots of puzzle pieces. A private Nest message might be a better option.

OP, my mom just bought https://www.sahalie.com/jump.jsp?itemType=PRODUCT&RS=1&itemID=10974&keyword=76163 for MH, who is also deployed, and they don't need to be plugged in or anything.

I've seen a lot of military surprise homecomings. It wouldn't work on me. I always have my back to the corner and my face to the door. Looking for terrorists, criminals, various other threats, and husbands.

At the bottom of any reply, there's something that says contact. Click on that.

ETA: I noticed in some older posts that you put your email in a few, I'd go back and edit those too. You never know who's lurking.

  • The basics, like soaps ext. Snacks, candy, cookies, magazines.... ext. Make sure you send it soon or it you will pay alot for shipping and he might not get it intime.
  • Are you trying to send it for him to get it by Christmas or just to send it in general? In my experience it doesn't really do any good to send it priority unless you're just really wanting to spend that extra money. If it's going to take 10-30 days to get to him, it's going to take that long period which it may quite possibly due to the area he's in.

I send hard candy, jerky, any soup, chili, etc that has a pull top on it, drink mixes like kool aid singles, lemonade, etc. I've also sent bags of chips and bakery items but the kind of bakery stuff that they can put in vending machines that way it's fresher longer. More than once I've sent them cheese danishes and cinnamon rolls that way and they've still been ok when my guys have received them. Twizzlers, fig newtons, cheese crackers, peanut butter, oreo brownies...think of things you can put into a lunch kit and you're usually good!

  • Oh and I forgot!  They've asked me a few times for lip balm, toothpaste, deodorant, and that kind of stuff. It's gotten a lot colder there the past few weeks so anything winter-ish would be great!

  • We loved anything in individual packs that didn't need heated. Snacks, candy, cans of fruits, whatever. Baby wipes, baby wipes, baby wipes. The little wisp toothbrush things are awesome and some of the hand/foot warmer pouches were life savers.
