Shoot, what are my chances?!

Darn, I have the crockpot going at home - a 6 or 6.5 quart one, I think.  It's a 2 pounds of cut up chicken recipe with 3 cans of soup.  8 hour cook time.  It goes automatically to warm, which it will be doing for 4 hours.  This is the first time I've tried to do this, and I've been reading up on it, and it doesn't sound good.  I'm thinking I'm going to have a ton of burned chicken when I get home.  I am, aren't I?  The crockpot is too big, and the chicken will be in the crockpot too long, right?

  • You can't burn things in the crock pot, you can overcook them and meat dries out, but you can't burn. Your cook time is fine, but you didn't say if it was on Low of High? Hopefully low. But one thing though, yes, there is not enough. That's one of the bad things about the big crocks is that you have to double or triple everything. Crock Pots need to be filled at *least* half way full.
  • I think you will be fine.  I have never had anything burn in the crockpot before and I have left stuff in there longer than 8 hours.

  • I don't know. With 3 cans of soup I'd imagine that things would stay pretty moist in there and thus prevent burning. I only have off/low/high settings on mine and have never burned anything - even after leaving things on low for 12 hours.

  • Oh, it's low, thankfully the recipe called for on low.  I am SO bad at trying new things.

  • Thanks for the reassurances, ladies!  Otherwise I'd be sitting here stressing all day.

  • I don't think it's normal, but I did succeed in burning something in the crock pot.  Oh the smell was horrific.

You take my ovaries, I take your yarns.
  • You CAN burn stuff in the crockpot if its in there too long and all the liquid cooks out. Its not impossible, its just not super easy to do.

You'll probably be fine, but your chicken might be dried out being on the warm setting for so long. Its hard to tell until you actually try it.
