Cloth Diapering

CD during the day, logistical question

I am fairly new to cloth diapering. I just completed my stash (all pockets) and haven't started CDing full time yet. I am planning to use disposables at night since it seems many people have trouble with this. I'm also using disposable wipes. I bought a pail liner for the cloth diapers that I will use with my flip top plastic garbage pail, but what should I do with the disposable stuff? I don't really want two garbage cans. I've thought about using a laundry sorter, but it doesn't seem big enough. I might just tape a small plastic bag into the garbage pail to put the 1 disposable from the nighttime change along with the wipes...any other ideas? You guys always have creative solutions I've never though of. Thanks for your help!

  • Why not just use one of those small garbage cans? Like the ones you use in the bathroom? You might have to change it more often that you would like, but it seems like it would be an easy solution.

Since you are using pockets, why not use a double stuffed pocket for nighttime? Also, have you considered cloth wipes? I started out with disposable wipes, and I was constantly sorting them out of my wetbag. I finally made the conversion to cloth wipes when I got sick of spending on disposables. If you are doing diaper laundry all ready, washing wipes is no big deal at all. It has actually made my life easier.

  • First, I would do cloth wipes. It will be so much easier. Especially when out and about for a diaper change. You can just toss them in the CD can. No sorting involved. For the overnight diaper I would just throw it away in your big trash can each morning and not worry about keeping it in the room somewhere.

And honestly, I would give CD a shot a night. You never know. DS is not a heavy soaker so he is fine overnight in his BG with the regular insert. Nothing else involved for us. And if DC is going to leak through cloth he will most likely leak through the disposable too.

  • If you are going to be using disposable wipes, I would probably suggest a separate trash can for ease of use.  That being said, I agree with pp in suggesting trying cloth wipes.  I thought I would hate them, but I love my cloth wipes and don't know why it took me so long to switch to them!

I also would suggest trying out cloth for overnight.  We use cloth 24/7 and have no problems at night.  It's worth a shot- you could double stuff a pocket or try different inserts.  I actually started off using cloth at night because I didn't like the idea of my LO sitting in the same disposable all night long when he actually slept longer periods.  If you already have the cloth, its worth a shot KWIM?  :)

  • If we have something to throw away, we walk it to our main kitchen garbage.

That said, we use cloth wipes (well, I do. DH still uses the occasional disposable wipe) and we haven't had any problems with overnight since I got some hemp inserts.

I don't want stinky garbage hanging out in my LO's bedroom. It would take too long to accumulate enough to amount to anything to take out - it's easier to just get rid of things as they happen.

  • We had a garbage pail in the closet for sposie trash and the CD pail got demoted into the bathroom after solids started. I held onto disposable wipes for the longest time, and I am soooo mad that I didn't switch sooner. They are 100% easier to use ( I only use 2 per poo). Plus it took forever to fill up the small garbage can and it was  a PITA to change the garbage bag when it was only half full to begin with. If you didnt' change it every few days it would stink sooo bad. It is just easier to be all cloth. Oh, and I had a ton of problems with leaking sposies at night and once we figured out a good combo, our nighttime diaper is leak proof

  • Thanks for your help. I think I'll just throw stuff away in the main trash can in the kitchen until I run out of the disposable wipes/diapers. I may try out cloth diapering at night, just to see if it poses a problem or not.  Since my son doesn't leak out of disposables at night, maybe he'll do fine with cloth too. I do think I'll eventually use cloth wipes, but I still have a giant box of disposables to use up.
