Earths best baby food question

Someone mentioned in an earlier post that Earths best has BPA in the lids, which I had read online. My question is, the BPA isn't good for babies, but is only dangerous if ingested... right? I know that in plastics if it is heated it can be released into the bottle/cup etc but if the BPA is in the metal lid, since it won't be heated is it really an issue to worry about? IMO I don't think it is, but I tend to be very relaxed... do you think it's a concern?

Re: Earths best baby food question

  • Yeah, I got a little worried when I read that too.  It *probably* isn't an issue.  But, Plum Organics is BPA free.  If you're going to buy food, you might as well buy the non-bpa (imo).  So, we'll be switching.  I was pretty bummed when I read that.

  • MH went on a BPA bender when I was pg. You'll find it in almost all jar lids. It can get into the food if the jar was tilted and the food touched the lid. I took a jar of EB to Thanksgiving and the lid was covered with food when I opened it. I didn't scrape that food off to feed DD for this exact reason.

Also, remember that heating is part of the canning process. I'm not sure how it works in a mass production setting, but normally jars are heated to get the vacuum seal. That heat could release BPA.

I have a couple EB jars that someone gave me. Any other store bought food is Plum Organics or Ella's.

  • Argh.... I didn't think about the canning process. Bums me out b/c now I'll have to order whatever food we get (prob from amazon) b/c EB is the only organic baby food sold in our small town (at one grocery store across town)... not a big deal, but just silly that the biggest organic babyfood companies uses bpa in the lids.
  • I'm glad you posted this, I didn't know! I mostly make DS's food but we do have a stockpile of jars we got on sale for traveling or when I'm lazy :P. I wonder which other brands have it and which don't?

  • I didn't know that either. It seems like BPA is in a lot of stuff. I read that it's on those semi-glossy receipts like from a gas station. I started washing my hands after touching them. Ugh, when will they phase them out?

Actually, almost every can of food out there has BPA in it. BPA is used to line cans so the food doesn't break the metal down. I have been watching for foods that don't use it, and so far there is one company that sells tomatoes without BPA in the can, but it's hard to find. This is why I rarely buy canned food, and if I need something I will get glass contained foods instead. At least that way you are minimizing the BPA exposure somewhat!

Which company? I've been trying to find BPA-free tomatoes for months. Eden Organic (which is local here, yay!) uses BPA-free cans for most of their products, but they still have it in their tomatoes. I've been using Pom tomatoes that come in those cartons. Apparently, Hunt's has been spending millions over the past couple years trying to find a BPA alternative.

The powers that be are working on phasing out the BPA receipt paper. Almost every receipt you get has it. When you start seeing receipt paper that has little red flecks in it, that's supposed to be the BPA-free paper.

  • That is a bummer. We are planning on starting solids soon and I was considering "earts best". But maybe I will prepare food at home instead. Thanks for posting this.

Not sure where to get these in stores, but you can order online: https://www.sproutbabyfood.com/stage1.php?sku=PEAR.

BPA-free pouches w/ fruits & veggies, co-founded by Tyler Florence. I've heard good things about this line from my mom's group. I've been meaning to buy Tyler Florence's book on baby food too.
