Pockets sucked for me for overnight, even though that's what I used for about 3 months - we had a lot of leaks.
I now use SBish snapless with an extra insert (varying brands - either hemp or bamboo) and a PUL cover - I use Blueberry Coveralls or Rumparooz OS, though I'm going to have to ditch the RaR soon because they're already on the biggest setting (granted, my baby is 17+ lbs and it's a stuffed diaper....).

the RaR were always way too short in the rise for us. I had to sell mine after using them for a few months. great concept, but they didnt think the rise through too well.

I use a Kawaii Good Night Heavy Wetter with a microfiber and a hemp in it. Works great for us, and it's cheap.
For a newborn, we had to change with every feed because that's how often he pooped. So prefolds would have been fine until the one-size stuff fit. We did have a few stray AIO we used at night, but that was a "it's 3 am" issue, not an absorbency issue.
For the newborn stage, prefolds are fine since they don't sleep long...we usually did an AIO or fitted at night just for the ease. We now use BG's stuffed with 2 MF inserts and a hemp insert. We had luck with fitteds and wool for some time but they started to irritate DS and no amount of stripping helped.
"Normal day, let me be aware of the treasured day you are. Let me learn from you, love you, bless you before you depart...let me hold you while I may."
Pockets stuffed with hemp inserts worked until DD was 5 months old and became a tummy sleeper. We've been using fitteds with wool ever since and haven't had any leaks.
For the first few weeks, DD was waking up a ton and we changed her pretty much every time she got up, so we used prefolds and covers. Since then we've used BG pockets and added absorbency as needed. Right now she's sleeping about 10 hrs overnight and wearing a BG with the big insert, one MF doubler, and a hemp doubler. We also put butt paste on her and use a fleece liner.
