Cloth Diapering

Encouragement

Hi everyone :) I am so excited to CD... BUT... my husband's family is constantly bi%$^ing about my desire to use cloth diapers. My response to this is that I can do it and want to do it. His snotty cousin had the nerve to tell me yesterday that after 1 blowout I won't be doing them anymore.

Also a newsflash... I am not asking any of them to come over and change my LO's diapers... so why are they so negative?

What happened to family encouraging you? Do people do this to you and what is your response?

I finally got my DH on board and now this latest string of doubt and insult from his family has him refusing to CD again. I am just so frustrated...

Re: Encouragement

  • People are scared of what they don't understand. When I was pregnant and working on my registry, I told my work friend that I really was committed to cloth diapering and her exact words were "dont be a martyr mother" along with a dirty look. I guess she thought I would be complaining about the extra work that goes along with CD and she didn't want to hear it? I don't know what she meant, I was so taken aback. My family didn't say anything, but I can tell they don't get it. Whatever, they don't have to change the diapers, I do!

I didn't give my DH a choice. I just said, we're doing it this way, and he seems strangly proud when he tells people about it. People give us weird looks when they hold the baby because her butt is so much bigger with the CDs, but we don't justify ourselves. And I am SOOOO happy with my CDs.

  • I think that when you tell people you are CD'ing they think of the old fashioned cloth diapers. I had so many people tell me that CD'ing will only last a week, or that I didn't know what I was getting into.

Once I got them and showed them my CD's everyone was like "Those are CD's?!" because they were expecting the old fashioned ones. Once they understood how easy they were to use, they didn't give any trouble about them anymore.

  • Oh, so there are no blowouts in disposables? Really?

I would just start saying "wow, so you're coming to my house to change all the diapers?!!" every time they make a comment. We both know they'll likely never change one, so who cares? They can think what they think, and you can save thousands of dollars.

  • Babies have explosions in disposables as well just tell them that.  If you really want to get into it you could also remind them that disposables also have really harsh chemicals in them (huggies was just in the news about the burns they have caused.

Others in our family also cloth diaper so there was nothing said in our choice to CD.

In the end DO WHAT YOU WANT TO DO.

    I agree with this.

I was at a consignment store the other day and I asked if they happened to have any CDs and this older woman who was nearby (and had nothing to do with the conversation,) approached me and told me I was out of my mind...  I just told her about the chemicals in diapers and how I don't feel comfortable having those things in contact with my baby if I can avoid it. She just walked away. My dad is also funky about CDing, but that's because he doesn't really understand that today's CDs are not the CDs he and his siblings wore in the 60's lol. He'll come along once he actually sees them.

I'd be super annoyed if my family was being SO negative, I'd probably end up telling them that my decisions regarding my child are none of their concern, though that would not be a diplomatic move at all. I can have a temper when it comes to things like this.

  • Deciding to CD is not a light decision. DH and I went back and forth in the midst of all the research, trying to decide what made the most sense. After I learned of all the positive benefits of CDing, there was absolutely no going back. I think it is normal to have doubts at first.

Cloth diapering is easy and FUN. Whoever said that using disposables is fun? NOBODY in the history of the world can honestly say that they get excited to buy sposies. But I bet 99% of the people who CD LOVE it! Really, why do you think I constantly am on this board.. because I friggin love CDs! lol.

Anyways, what I am trying to say is, don't let them hurt your excitement. I will bet that your DH will really like CDing, and after a month or so, he will be able to advocate for them.

  • people will do that to you no matter what the topic. If they formula fed and you want to BF they will shoot you down, if you say you want 5 kids and they are overwhelmed with 2 they will put you down. People see a pregnant belly or a little baby and think it means they can give any advice. I find it very frustrating when people (like my sister) make comments about how 3 kids is really hard---im due with #3 in June....why do I need to hear that?

Ignore the the naysayers, and even with your husband- dont overload him with it. Its all an idea until the baby is here, reality hits when that baby is put in his and your arms...then you can change the baby into cloth and he'll see its easy. Be flexible and try not to push him, men get stubborn when you do in my experience ;)

    sorry people are stupid lol.

    This (Y)!

My DH's family all rolled their eyes at me during my shower when I told them I was going to CD.  A couple of IL said I would not last, which just made me more determined before I had LO.  Now that we have been CD'ing for 4 months my DH and I both LOVE it.  I kind of want to bring my CD's with me when we go home for Christmas, but I am not sure I'll have enough room in my luggage.  Especially once I am hauling back all of LO's Christmas presents.

My DH was very skeptical at the beginning too but now he gets excited about new CD's I buy.  In fact I have some xtra hemp liners and when I was prepping some new inserts for some new CD's I bought he used the hemp liners in them instead because he wanted to use the new CD's right away!
