Babies: 3 - 6 Months

anyone else suffering through the 4 month wakeful?

Im pretty sure LO is experiencing the 4 month wakeful. for the past two weeks he has been waking every 45 min-2 hours. Prior to this he was never STTN but we would get 4-6 hours stretches. He is typically not hungry and only needs a little bit of soothing to go back to sleep but I am dying. He goes to bed at 8 and is up constantly from then until about 530 when he is up for the day. I am hoping it doesnt last much longer but I am so sleep deprived (DH works an hour away from home and leaves at 430 am to go to work so I try to minimize his involvement at night, though he helps a lot) Any tips? How long did this last for everyone else?

  • Me!  I could have written your post, right down to the never STTN prior to this. (Note--is it wrong that I feel a little relieved by your post?  I read these boards and feel like the only one who has a 4 month old who has never slept 10 hours straight though the night!)  Anyway, I could handle getting up 2 (or 3) times for quick feedings between 7 p.m. - 7:30 a.m., but this 5x/night with a 5:30 a.m. wakeup is killing me.  I really don't have any tips--but not for lack of trying--everything I've read says just do whatever you need to do to get through it.  I am REALLY hoping this ends soon, and you have my sympathies!

  • I am.  DD slept through the night prior to about 2 weeks ago.  This morning I put on the projector and she chatted to herself for about 20 minutes and went back to sleep so I am going to try that when she wakes through the night, she isn't hungry and she spits the paci so I figure this is worth a shot.

It is making me a zombie at work.

  • I hesitate to put a label on it, but I'm there with you. DS was sleeping for a 9-12 hour stretch, but the past 4 nights he's been up every 15 minutes - 2 hours. I'm just glad that he goes back to sleep with a paci and a pay - this would be even worse if he took forever to get back down! He's also gone from easy to impossible to put down for the night. I hope this doesnt last for long, but I'm trying to mentally prepare myself for the long haul.

  • I went through it at just over 3 months...it was horrific and lasted about 2 weeks.  The GREAT news is that when it was over, she started sleeping from 730-3am, BF'ing, and going back to sleep until 630 - and I bet she would sleep later but the other two love to peek into her crib in the morning and yell:  "Mama, Ave is still sleeping," at which point she promptly wakes up!

  • Ours started last week waking up multiple times b/w 3-5. It's a little better but still not back to STTN. At 4:30 this morning she was ready to party.

  • We are suffering through the 3-5 month wakeful Tongue Tied

This child used to sleep 8+ hours every.single.night from 5 weeks to 12 weeks....And then when i went back to work she gave reverse cycling a whole new meaning. I am thinking she will sleep again when she is 4 or 5 years old.

  • We started it in the 3rd month....we're going onto week 5 of it.  DS used to sleep 8-10 hours straight, then it hit us and he's up 2-5 times a night.  I wish it would end soon!

  • I am hoping we're on the tail end of it as LO has had 2 days in a row of more normal sleep.  I think it has lasted 2-3 wks and it was killing me as well.  I also don't ask DH to get up at night b/c I'm EBFing and some mornings are less than pleasant for us all!  I've gone back to caffeinated coffee to make it through the day.  I hope LO goes back to normal soon and you all get better sleep!  GL!

  • Yes!  I could have written your post.  LO never SSTN, but I'd generally get at least a 5 hour stretch.  It's been 12 nights so far...I hope it ends soon!

  • Me too! My son never STTN, we recently stopped swaddling so I'm sure that has something to do wtih it. We had his four month doc visit yesterday and she didn't mention anything about four month wakeful but said we should probably start sleep training. Because he shouldn't be waking up 3 - 5 times a night! Good luck ladies, I feel your pain!
