So as I read over a lot of the posts on here, I have begun to realize that there are a few names that are every where on here, but no one considers popular or trendy yet. This may sound mean but to me it is a bunch of un-originality. They are all names that I can pin to a TV show right now, and the fact that people pretty much copied the names on TV, but complain about popular names like Avery and Brayden somewhat blows my mind.
Here are a few that are standing out to me right now . . .
Quinn - Glee
Finn- Glee
Harper - Disney Channel Wizards of Waverly Place
Harrison - Dexter
These are just a few, but how do you all feel about names like these ?
Re: "Popular" or "trendy" names
I love Finn... that is all.
All those names are NMS.
I do like Phineas though.
You are assuming that everyone who names their kids those names "copied" them from a tv show? FTR, I haven't seen any of those shows, and IMO, none of them are as overused and overrated than Brayden. Or any other name with an imaginary "y" thrown in there.
Avery is ok.
I have seen in from Grey's Anatomy names:
Lexi- Which is my DD so the popularity doesn't bother me
Sloane
Jackson Avery- Not my favorite, but it goes with your theory of getting super popular from being on TV
Callie
Owen
Addison
Isobel (Izzy)
Olivia Harper- The nurse from the 1st Season
I think there's a difference between trendy and popular. Classic names will always be popular because they are GREAT names IMO (Abigail, Elizabeth, etc. are what I consider classic popular). Trendy names are a whole new kind of popular.. and I agree with you on Harper but I've not heard the other names you mentioned as much.
I did think about that, but I think in the "who came first" race between name popularity and tv show, tv show arose before name became so popular.
Im not saying every single person that uses Quinn, etc. is using it because they have seen it on Glee, im saying I think the names have risen in popularity because of the show, but people think those names are "exempt" from being popular or trendy because they arent in the top 100.
As a long time lurker on this board (and occasional poster) I just wanted to throw out a couple of things.
First, I think many women on this board would consider the terms "popular" and "trendy" to be two different things. Popular names would be names like Jacob that are used by a lot of people but are also solid names that have been around for a long time and have a history. Trendy names, on the other hand, are those that just sort of popped up in our culture recently and don't necessarily have staying power or a deep history. So, the Aiden, Brayden, Jaydon, etc. naming trend would fall into this category. While SOME women on this board tend to prefer names that are neither popular nor trendy. Most of the women who post here have nothing again popular names. It's mostly the trendy names that bother them.
Secondly, the funny thing about the list of names you provided is that while some women on this board like those names, there's an equal number of women here who probably wouldn't like any of them. For example, it seems like the women on this board are pretty split over the name Harper. Some seem to love it, and some don't.
I don't know how long you've been visiting this board, but it seems like you're getting a little worked up over an observation that actually isn't all that accurate, in my opinion.
I just want to give you a world as beautiful as you are to me.
Agree. Well said.
The name Finn is on our "final" list. I didn't even know that there was a Finn on television until someone else mentioned it to me as I don't watch the show Glee. I have always loved this name and don't associate it with the show because there is a lot more history to it than it being on a television show, and to reduce it to just another trend isn't fair.
Quite honestly there is something negative to be said about every name by someone. What really matters is that it is spelled correctly and the parents love it for their child.
I don't like any of those names.
I do think that TV sometimes reflects what's popular in names. A lot of people think that Friends using Emma caused the name to skyrocket in popularity, but it was already pretty popular before it was used on Friends.
Here's another trend you can link back to TV, most Disney Channel, I think --
Boys names for girls -- Teddy and Charlie are both examples of this from the show Good Luck, Charlie and Disney Channel just put out a new movie where the main character is a girl named Dylan.
Yup. Sixthed.
I actually am on this board almost daily, and have come to the conclusion that the general population of this board, or "regulars" is not an acurate representation of the current baby naming population.
I like many, many, many names that are in the top 100, and they are in the top 100 because they are good names. Kaylee, Brayden, Olivia, etc. dont bother me, nor am I concerned that my child will be one of 5 Olivia's. I strongly dislike any name that is currently on an 80 year old. Ada, Evelyn, Isla, are horrid to me. But as you all know, I am definately the minority on this board.
My point to this whole post was that people are very quick to judge children, and their parents, who have names that are "trendy" when they in fact are picking names that are equally as trendy. Just my opinion. You all throw yours out on a daily basis so I thought I would toss mine out. Thats all.
No, this board is not an accurate representation of the current baby naming population. Unlike the general population, most people who frequent this board have a long-held love for names and have done much research before choosing names for their children. There is nothing wrong with liking popular or even trendy names. Everyone has their own style. What most people on here have a problem with are made up and misspelled names. While it may be trendy to give your child an old-fashioned name right now, I think most people with this naming style like that the names are underused and have a history, as opposed to names like Brayden and Kaylee which are neither. They may seem unique to the first time parent, but are in fact everywhere you turn. Also, Brayden and Kaylee are very different from names like Olivia. While very popular, Olivia is a classic name. And I don't think anyone on here would ever judge a child for having a bad name. But it's hard not to assume that a child with a made up, misspelled name has some uneducated parents.
Well said!! you are right, although "old lady" names may be considered trendy, at least we can rest assured that they are not tryndee!
Agreed! Any population of people who spend significant amounts of time on a message board dedicated to a narrow and specific subject matter are pretty much, almost by definition, NOT representative of the population as a whole. But If you don't like, respect, or agree with the opinions of the regulars on this board (and I'm not saying you should), I'm just curious about why you spend so much time here.
So just because a character has a name in a TV show, it means it's trendy?
I disagree.
