Perineal Massage

Maybe this is a silly question, but what are you ladies using (or planning on using) as a perineal massage lubricant.  At my last visit my OB mentioned I should start them around 36 weeks and said to use something that's water based - not silicone.  I was too embarassed to ask her if that means Astroglide or KY...or if there's a non-sexual substance.  Do you ladies know?

Pretty sure KY is water based. It should say on the package. Astroglide is also probably water based, but not positive.

My MW used olive oil.

On the baby websites I read (babycenter I think it was?) they mentioned vegetable or olive oil?

Not sure how I feel about that since I use those to cook and it seems just weird to think about it LOL....but there definitely is a list of no-nos out there, so make sure you avoid the products listed.

My midwife last time told me it wasn't that useful, that ppl ended up irritating themselves and it helps a lot more to do the massage IN LABOR. So my midwife used olive oil the whole time, and it worked! No tears. This time will be the same.

I never did it myself, but my midwife did during birth and there was a small charge for mineral oil on the bill. I'm guessing that's what it was for.

*note; it worked miracles! I got a tiny tear, not even enough to really measure.

We (well DH) are using KY jelly, it's water based.
