Milk Intolerance??? - anyone with experience with this

Hi, my son is 14 weeks old and 50/50 formula and breastfed.  He is super fussy especially around feedings.  My first son was nothing like this.  I thought maybe it was acid reflux as he does spit up quite a bit, but when I took him to a covering pediatrician today she took one look at him and said he had head to toe eczema and his symptoms sound like milk intolerance.  My pedi never mentioned his eczema to me before.  So as a result we are trying soy-based formula and I am trying to eliminate dairy to see if that works.  Has anyone else had the pedi switch to soy and has this worked for baby?

Thanks!

  • My DS has a milk protein allergy.  We switched to soy formula and saw a huge improvement.  I know others were switched to Alimentum or Nutramigen if the soy didn't seem to help.  I hope the soy works for you!

  • We're trying a dairy free diet to see if my DD has a milk allergy (I breast feed). It's so tough. I went to a pastry/coffee place for lunch and it was torture. Good luck!

  • My LO has a mild milk intolerance, diagnosed because of her eczema. It's not that bad, so the pedi said I could quit dairy if I wanted or not and to use hydrocortisone cream on LO's skin if it flares up. I tried to cut back on dairy for awhile, but I don't eat meat, and it was hard to get enough protein to feel full.

It is totally doable, though, especially if you eat meat :) Check out your local co-op or Whole Foods for dairy alternatives. There are even some good soy free options- we love coconut milk, it has a very neutral taste. We also just got coconut based spreadable butter.

I hope your LO feels better with the diet switch!

  • Just a warning on avoiding dairy.  Check the labels of everything.  They put whey in so many items, and if it's an allergy, the whey will cause just as much of a problem.
  • Thanks for the tips ladies.  For the formula piece they gave me a sample of similac soy to try.  He is super fussy baby...poor guy, so hoping this helps a bit.  His cousin is lactose intolerant too....many on my husbands side are.  Thanks
  • I 50/50 formula and breastfeed too, and since 4 weeks old, my DD has been on nutramigen and I had cut out dairy.

It got better within the first week.  Good luck!

I hope it works.  Did your doctor have you go straight to nutramigen?  Or did you try a soy-based one first?  I have seen wonderful things about nutramigen, but looks very pricey

  • I am completely dairy free as DS has an allergy.  Once you get used to it its really not that hard.  A great resource is godairyfree.org.  Since you mentioned it in a PP, be aware that lactose intolerance and dairy intolerance/allergy are not the same thing so just because something is lactose free doesn't make it dairy free.  Also, lots of babies who are dairy intolerant are also intolerant to soy so if the symptoms don't improve on the new formula that could be your case.  Eliminating soy from your diet to breastfeed is much more challenging, but definitely doable.  Good luck!

ETA:  Oh, and it can take weeks to get all the dairy out of your system so don't get discouraged if you don't see an immediate improvement.  It took us four full weeks to get DS back on track.
