High-Risk Pregnancy

Intro

Hi Ladies - Where do I start.. I have been high risk since around 13 weeks (currently 26 weeks).  I did IVF so my OB considered me automatically high risk so I go for scans every two weeks (cervical length and growth).  At 16 weeks I was diagnosed with complete previa but as of 25 weeks my placenta is now low lying.  However I am still on pelvic rest until 32 weeks. Just today I found out that I failed my 1 hour glucose test with a 204 so I get to skip the 3 hour test and go directly to my high risk ob for a diabetes consultation.  As you can imagine today has not been a happy day.  I wont see my high risk ob until 12/2 due to his schedule and thanksgiving next week so I am trying to do as much research on my own to reduce my levels now.  Any pointers will really help.  I have not read through recent posts yet.. that is next on my list.

  • There are certainly a lot of GD posts here, with a lot more experience than what I've had.  I failed the 1-hr and 3-hr tests but not by much and am controlling it with diet only.  To hold you over until you meet with the MFM and the dietician, this might be useful.  And it doesn't help us that we're on bed rest because we can't use exercise as a way to help metabolize.

Try these two websites:  www.diabetes.org and www.eatright.org.  They should have descriptions of what constitutes a "serving" of carbs and which foods have how many grams of carbs in them.  Also, would recommend choosing foods that are lower on the Glycemic Index (such as apples over bananas) and choose lower-sugar cereals instead of granola cereals.  (Cascadian farms granola cereal seriously spikes my sugar, but I can do Chex mix all day long...!)

As a guideline, I am supposed to have 12-15 servings of carbs throughout the day, each serving consists of 15g of carbs.  This is broken up over 6 meals.  My example for a day of eating would look like this:

    7:45am:  3 servings (45g)
    10:00 am:  1-2 serving (15-30g)
    12:30 pm:  2-3 servings (30-45g)
    3:30 pm: 1-2 servings (15-30g)
    6:30 pm: 2-3 servings (30-45g)
    8:30 pm: 2 servings (30g)

    Good Luck!

    Lisa
