December 2011 Moms

Oh no, he flipped back!

I went to my 37 week appt today.  I was excited because I was getting an u/s today to check weight and size.  Boy was I disappointed when the u/s tech put the wand on my belly and saw that he was breech.  He was transverse for the longest time, but 3 weeks ago he turned head down.  I know this b/c it was confirmed by my OB and also b/c I felt him flip and felt his hiccups way down in my pelvis.

Now I am scheduled for a C-section on 12/5.  I was definitely not expecting this and am a little upset that I have to have a c-section.  I am hoping he flips again.  I am going to try every exercise to try to get him to flip back around.

Any suggestions to help my breech baby flip would be appreciated.

  • Oh no! This is my great fear too. I'm at 34 weeks. LO is head down...but I REALLY think he's trying HEAVILY to switch back.

Fingers cross he decides to flip back. I've heard a lot about hot/cold compresses to try and get LO to flip back. There's a website about it...I'm sure someone will reccommend (I don't know which one it is).

I'd be a little upset too. But December 5th seems like a good day if LO is stubborn.

  • Sorry.  Hopefully you'll baby will flip back for you asap.  I've seen people on this board recommend www.spinningbabies.com.  I've also heard that accupuncture can help.  Good luck!

  • I will just throw it out to you that if he is flipping up at 37 weeks, he could certainly flip down.

    A few things though:

Try lots of hand/knee crawling and cat-cow yoga poses. They feel good and motivate the baby to be flip & drop.

Good posture is super important. if you are slouching, your ribs are giving him a spot for his head. Try to sit up as straight as possible & pull back your shoulders.

    Good luck :)

  • So sorry. I'm still waiting for our girl to get into position, she likes being transverse too. :)  I think I read somewhere that leaning over with hands bracing on a table, etc is supposed to help. I've been doing this to relieve back pain, not sure if it's doing anything for me yet, but I'm only 34w. GL, I'm sure other ladies have better suggestions :)

  • See a Webster certified chiropractor! Also, an acupuncturist who specializes in women's health, and there's a hypnobabies track you can buy called "Turn, Baby, Turn" or something.

And, you don't HAVE to have a c-section with a breech baby. Do some research ... there may be OBs or midwives in your area who have experience with breech and will deliver (depending on the presentation). We're in a mid-size city and there are two OBs who still deliver breech babies vaginally.

  • That is so sad!  Were you scheduled to deliver by c-section already?  I only ask because there are ways that babies can be manually turned into a head down position, and maybe you wouldn't need to have a c-section.  Someone posted on here earlier today about how being on all fours can help get baby into position also.

  • That stinker!! I hope you are able to get him to flip back!
  • He could still flip, some don't flip until last minute, but the chances just go down b/c of space issues.  Like other PP's have suggested there is www.spinningbabies.com, acupuncture, and also ask your OB about external version.  External version is manual external technique that OB's use to turn baby into a head down position.  My DD was frank breech and my OB attempted external version but it was unsuccessful.  I must warn you that it is very painful, I thought it was more painful than labor pains but I was willing to try anything.  My OB at the time was an old school doc and since her feet were up by her ears, he thought it was safe to deliver her vaginally.  Precautions were taken (I delivered in a surgical suite with staff at the ready; there was about 15 people in the room...no joke or exaggeration) and I had to have a large episitomy but it was successful.
