Have any of you bought your breast pump yet? I planned on buying it after the baby arrives to make sure that I can use it but now I'm re-thinking that idea. What if I need it sooner because he won't latch? Or what if I can't use it at all and have wasted the money? Can you take them back to Target or BRU if they are not opened? What are your plans?
Re: Have you bought your breast pump?
I bought the Medela Harmony single pump. It was 35$ at WalMart and my SIL is the one that told me to get it because it's cheaper and works just as good. She loves it and said it's really convenient to take with you anywhere plus we are SAHs so it's not like we would need to pump as fast as possible on a lunch break or whatever at work.
I am not planning on taking it back. If it doesn't work and I need a different kind my hospital and the local heath dept rent them out and I can try different kinds to find the one I need.
I'm on the fence on this one right now. Amazon has my pump on sale and has an additional 30% off promo code and I got a $10 coupon from them so it's almost half off. I want to buy it incase I have to pump because of latch issues (inverted nipples) or to bring in my milk supply buuuuut if bf'ing doesn't work out I don't want to have wasted the money. I have no clue what to do as far as if I should buy it or not. The promo's end the 21st so I'm trying to decide between now and then.
ETA: Okay I lied apparently, I got on there and it was on sale today plus I could use the promo code and coupon and got free shipping so I got it $120 off... needless to say it is on it's way! Thanks for posting this and reminding me!
DH bought a PIS at a rummage sale this summer and I just ordered replacement tubes for it. Total investment $70 and the hospital/insurance include the rest of the pump kit if I get it when I'm there. I also plan to EP so will need the pump right away...
I exclusively breastfed DD#1 for over 10 months, pumped during the day while at work (7-5pm,then school at night and on the weekends) and was able to get enough for her using a $30 handheld manual pump from Target (Avent). I never needed an electric, never needed a double. It really is not necessary IMO (I was a full time student, full time insurance agent and single mom while pumping -- I managed just fine, never supplemented).
Second daughter I was a SAHM. No need for a pump of any kind really, but I did have my trusty manual handheld pump that I ended up using less than 10 times when I had to leave her for more than a few hours and to relieve some of the engorgement. I never needed it to get milk flowing in the beginning, that's what the baby is for.
If I breastfeed this time around, I'll probably grab a new manual cheapo pump at the store if I feel like I need it.
My advice is to wait on the expensive pump till you are about to head back to work. Buy a little manual cheapo one for the time being and it can be your backup (trust me those work great! strong suction) if you do end up needing an electric.
I have seen many many women on the bump spend $2-$300+ on a pump and not make it past the 6 week mark. Not a good investment IMO, especially since you cant return or sell them used.
Yes.
I got a brand new Medela Double electric on Craigs list, for $50!
