Has anyone had their doctor tell them they want an ultrasound to measure the baby's shoulders?

My doctor wants me to have this done at 38 weeks. Is this a common test or should I start worrying that they're going to try and push me to a ceasarian? I went for a growth scan at 32 weeks and my baby was in the 50th percentile at 4 pounds 10 ounces so I wouldn't imagine she'd be large as that's right in the middle of all babies. AnyOne else been told they're going to need this test?

  • My doctor schedules an u/s for 37 weeks to check LO's size. She hasn't said anything about shoulders... I didn't have a growth scan at 32 weeks though. My last u/s was at 20 weeks so there really isn't much of a guess on how big LO is until 37 weeks. They grow pretty quickly towards the end so maybe he/she is just checking in?

  • not standard of care to get any US for an uncomplicated pregnancy in the 3rd trimester...... growth US are notoriously inacurate at weights and should be used for a screen in an at risk situation (CHTN, pre-e, GDM) and if abnormal followed serially.  I'm assuming there is a justification of some nature and you should definately ask for it before you get stuck with the bill for an unnecessary US or C/S.

  • I have an ultrasound scheduled for Tuesday, but my doc didn't mention anything about measuring shoulders.

  • This is me all over! I went to the OB yesterday and was ordered a urgent u/s for today because they are worried LO is getting to big to the point my tiny frame will not be able to vaginally deliver because his shoulders could get stuck! At 32 weeks I was told he was 6.5 lbs... so they are thinking he could be 9-11 lbs.

DW went in for her "last" sono at 36.5 weeks, but the baby was measuring big so now we have a sono per week until delivery apparently.

Apparently the amniotic fluid was measuring high, and the baby's abdomen was measuring larger than his head. The abdomen measurement is a proxy for the shoulders. He was in the 84-percentile, and measuring two weeks ahead.

So, we're scheduled for a growth scan and a biophysical profile.

DW was already on the "high risk" list because of "advanced maternal age" (37). So we've had a lot of sonograms :) .

Partially expecting labor to start during Thanksgiving dinner or during shopping on Black Friday.
