Betsy

I've mentioned in other posts that Betsy is my current favorite girls name right now. What do you think of it as a stand alone name? And can it be short for anything besides Elizabeth? Do you like Betsy? Why or why not? Discuss.

Re: Betsy

  • you know, i used to hate it. it was just so...i don't know...weird to me. but i've recently started watching private practice and dell's daughter is named betsy and she is just so dang cute that now i think i like it. i would personally never use it but it's definitely growing on me. and i like it more as a name on its own than a nickname for elizabeth.

  • I think Betsy is a cute nn for Elizabeth, but I can't say that I like it as a stand alone name.   Maybe I'm just fussy, but stand alone nicknames don't do it for me.

  • I love the name Betsy and I think it's fine as a stand alone name. DH hates the name bc of bad associations :(

  • Possible short for Bethany? That might be a stretch. I do love Betsy, I'm leaning towards it being a nn but, can see the appeal for it to be a stand alone.

  • I know I'm the odd one out but I strongly dislike Betsy. It's right up there on my list of old lady names with Mabel and Ruth. I don't ever think of names like these as strong willed girls, I think of a fragile little girl hiding in the back of the classroom wearing her table cloth looking lace dress and Mary Jane shoes. Sorry :(

  • ::points to siggy::  I obviously love it.  I think it's adorable.  It fits my toddler perfectly and I think it will fit her just as well when she's a teenager and an adult.  We get tons of compliments on it.

I don't think it works well as a standalone name, though.  While it grows well, it is "cutesy," so a more formal full name is nice to have as an option.  Like PP mentioned, it could work as a nn for Bethany if you don't like Elizabeth or Elisabeth.

This made me laugh!  My Betsy may wear smocked dresses and mary janes and big bows in her hair, but by god she's about as strong-willed as she could be!

  • I absolutely love it.

I think it is okay as a standalone name, but I prefer it as a nn for Elizabeth.

  • I LOVE Betsy.  It's my top choice right now if we have a girl, but DH isn't sold.  Definitely doesn't work for me as a stand alone name though, I'd just go with Elizabeth.  Did anyone read the Betsy-Tacy books as a kid?  They're probably why I love the name so much!

Your Betsy was my inspiration. ;)

I like Elizabeth, but it doesn't knock my socks off, you know? But I kind of agree that I feel like Betsy should have a more formal name. And if the nn blows my mind, maybe the full name doesn't have to, too? I'm just on the fence about this part I guess.

You know, I feel the same way about Elizabeth, to be honest.  I like Elizabeth, it's a beautiful and classic name.  But we didn't choose Elizabeth and then think, hey, how about Betsy as a nn?  We chose Betsy and then named her Elizabeth so that we could call her Betsy.  If that makes sense.  I know a lot of people on this board would argue that we should have named her what we planned to call her, but it's just NMS to give a nn as a full name.

I do think that Betsey (spelled this way) works better as a full name than my DD's spelling.  I'm not sure why I think that, but I do.  So that could be an option for you!

  • Love it. I think it works as a stand alone name, but I like the idea of giving a kid the option of a more formal name, too. Either way, Betsy is classic and spunky (a rare combo, IMO). Yes

  • I really like it! And since I'm one of the few people who don't really like the use of nicknames, I prefer it as a standalone name. Linus and Betsy are just too cute together, too! Go for it :)

  • I love Betsy! While I prefer it as a nickname, I definitely think it could stand alone. What about Bettina instead of Elizabeth/Elisabeth? I have to admit here that I'm not a big fan, and much prefer Elizabeth, but you asked for suggestions...

  • I think a lot of people are using nn's as full names. I see people naming their babies Betty on here, so I would imagine it's the same concept. I think Betsy is cute. It might pay off later to have a full name to use for jobs and whatnot... but I can't think of any other than Elizabeth.

I obviously can't speak for everyone, but my Betty's name is a nn for Elizabeth.
