TTC after 35

I'm a newbie with a few ??

Hello! Im 35, turning 36 in Dec.  I had my DS in 09(took us about 7 months) and we have been trying for about 9mths for #2, with no luck. I wasn't sure if I should wait and keep trying on our own or not, so a friend recommended her RE to me.  They told me that yes, since I'm 35 and have been trying for over 6 mts that I should see an RE.  The issue is, I haven't really done anything other than an ovulation calendar.  Are they going to recommend that I use opk first, or temp?  Now im starting to feel stupid that I made an appt. without doing these things first, but because of my age and the fact that it took a while with DS, I wanted to get as much help as possible.

In addition, once I turned 35 my periods have been a bit wonky.  They were always 28, 29 days -  now they can be 28 to 32 days, or they start with spotting for 5 days and end with heavy bleeding (this happened 2 times, I thought it might have been a miscarriage but my tests were all neg.)   I just don't want them to think we havent been trying because we didnt use the opk tests, and to turn us away.  Has anyone else went to an RE once they turned 35 or over, without doing the other methods first?  Be honest if you think Im jumping the gun here!  And thanks for listening, most of my friends have never had this issue and were all pregnant before 30 or completed their families by the time I was pg with DS.  I dont have the energy to explain what we have been doing, you know?

  • Welcome.   You may want to start temping and using OPKs with your next cycle but don't let that stop you from keeping the appointment with the RE.  He or she will likely arrange to run tests to see if you have any obvious issues, and will talk to you about treatment possibilities.  Good luck.
  • Hi, welcome and good luck!

  • Welcome to the board.  Most people here do temp and use OPKs however, there are many people in the world that don't.  I think that you should start temping and using OPKs but I don't think that your RE is going to think less of you because you are just now starting.  Good luck.

  • Welcome!  You can always start temping but I would keep the appt with the RE.

After more than 2 years of fertility treatments, FET did the trick!
IVF March 2012 - BFP! - Severe OHSS = 8 days in the hospital in kidney failure
    No heartbeat at 10w6d
    FET August 27,2012 = BFP!

  • I did temp and use OPKs for about 6 months before going to see the RE. But, I don't think there is any harm in going to see an RE and just make sure none of the obvious stuff is wrong before getting too far down the road. If everything comes back normal, you can try on your own for awhile before returning to the RE for the next step. Good luck!
