Advice on Slings?

Hi ladies: I'm a new FTM. So far, DS loves the carrier. We love our Ergo when we are out and about. For me it's a bit warm and cumbersome for just baby wearing around the house. I've been looking at sling style carriers but would love some advice.

Is there an "easy" sling that would work for around the house, just so I have a hand free? Thanks!

Your choices are a different soft-structured carrier (other than the Ergo), a pouch, ring sling, mei tai or wrap.  Although, if you think the SSC is warm and cumbersome, it's hard to think of what to recommend for you.

What's considered "easy" is subjective.  For instance, some people think ring slings are easy, whereas others find them tricky.  Or some people find back carries with a short wrap easy,  whereas others feel unsafe trying it.

Can you just put on one layer less of clothing to deal with the issue of being too warm?  Also, what is the difficulty that you're experiencing with the SSC?  Sharing an SSC with someone else can be annoying because you have to make all the adjustments to all the straps when the carrier goes from one person to the other.  So using a mei tai would address that problem--if that's the problem.  Or you could get an additional SSC for your partner so that you two each have your own.

Also, how old is your LO?

  • C-Charm is the expert, but I'll just mention that my go-to carriers are my Ergo and my Sleeping Baby Productions ring sling. I found the RS tricky at first, but now that I am practiced, it is super fast and easy.

  • DS is 3 weeks. When I say the ergo is warm I mean more for him than me, especially with the infant insert. Part of the issue is having to adjust & readjust the straps if DH used it last. DS enjoys it for walks and stores, when I'm moving consistently, but doesn't really enjoy being in it if I'm not consistently in motion.

By easy, I mean quick to put on and position DS for around the house stuff. After watching a few YouTube videos the Moby seems tricky to me, though I'm sure practice helps.

  • Sharing an SSC can be a pain!  Having to adjust the straps is like when someone else drives your car--and they move the seat and tweak the mirrors.  Sad

ETA:  Stupid bump!  It ate my post.

SSC's for babies the age of your DS drive me a little bananas.  The structure/firmness make it difficult for them to mold to your LO's body and provide the right amount of support.

You could try a ring sling.

A stretchy wrap (like to Moby) could be pre-tied so that you can pop your DS in and out.  However, I don't know if you're up for using a wrap.

You could try a mei tai, but you'd have to make some modifications.  I can find you a video or photo tutorial.  Basically, you'd have to roll the waist band to make the body shorter.  You'd also have to cinch the bottom in order to do legs out.   Also, for a newborn, I'd tie behind his back rather than under his bum.

Happy shopping!  Let us know what you decide on.

  • It is JUST like when he takes my car! I feel like it's never "just right" afterwards.

Thanks for the advice. I didn't realize the moby could be left pre-tied. That could work! I'm going to do some more checking. I'll let you know! : )
