Baby gates?

Boring post, I know, but I think we're going to have to get a few of these soon. Right now DS can only move backwards or in a circle, but he'll figure out how to go forward soon enough! Which ones do you have/like? I think we're going to need 3-4 for the tops and bottoms of each of our stair cases. Or should we get 2 and move them around depending on where we are in the house?

Re: Baby gates?

  • We have the one that you screw into the wall and unclip and they slide or swing. I love that style gate.

We don't really use gates though.  We have the one on her room and that's it.  We taught her early how to go up the steps.  It would make my life a ton easier having another gate or two, but this works and it's worked well so far.

  • We have a 3 story house so gates were a necessity even though he knows how to go up/down the steps safely. We have 2 Summer Infant Sure and Secure 36" Extra Tall gates at the top of the stairs on the third floor and at the entrance to the stairs on the second floor (so he can't access the top of the stairs going to the first floor OR the bottom of the stairs going to the third floor). We also have a Summer Infant 30" Secure Entry gate in the playroom doorway. They ran somewhere between $50-70 each, but well worth the peace of mind.

PS: If I've already posted about this once before, I apologize for the re-post. I seem to have a vague memory of maybe having this conversation before...

We have the same gates that Kelly is speaking of. We only have two gates and I just move them from the bottom of the steps to the top of the steps. Let me see if I can find a link online.

We still use our gates, mainly to keep DD from going upstairs. Even though she knows how to use the steps and always holds on, you still want to keep them confined to a room, say in case your in the kitchen making dinner.

  • We have a cardinal gate- https://www.cardinalgates.com/ss30a.html - like this, but black (matches our railings) and with an extension. We only have one- at the top of our steps (but our house is sort of flip-flopped w/ the kitchen, living & dining room, playroom and 2 bedrooms upstairs.) Our family room is downstairs w/ a lot of toys, but it's easy for us to keep an eye on DS when downstairs and for the most part he is fine on the steps now, but it's just nice to keep them contained!

  • We have a foot pedal one into our kitchen that I really like - bought at BRU( summer infant) - was originally for our dog and worked well for DS and now DD,

We have 2 of these ( expensive but well worth it ) some kids get really smart with gates my friends 2.5 year old knew how to operate it )

I really like them as they  have a lock /unlock feature and can be removed if you have company very easily .

  • Our house has an open floor plan, so instead of getting a gate we got one of those baby corrals.  (Similar to the circular "gate" that they used in the TV show the Rugrats.)

We do have one set of stairs that leads to the attic.  We don't use those much, so Dad cut a board and we slid it between the rails.  Evie can play on the bottom step, but she can't climb up.  It isn't jazzy, but It works for us.

  • We purchased the Dream Baby Gates from Babies R Us and absolutely love them.

They were very easy to install, are not an eye sore and have kept DD very safe!
