When does your 5 month old take their last nap?

And what time do they go to bed? TIA

Re: When does your 5 month old take their last nap?

  • She naps usually from 3-4 and we start her last bottle at 730pm and then she's in bed by 8pm... sometimes she'll take a short snooze on the car ride home from daycare so 430-5ish

  • He naps from 5:30-6 or 6:00-6:30, then is in bed by 8 or 8:30. So, 2 hours of awake time between last nap's wakeup and bedtime.

  • Okay... I need some serious help because I can't seem to get this kid's routine down right.

She's up most mornings at 5 a.m. (After being up on and off ALL NIGHT LONG).

I bring her to bed and nurse her on one side, we doze back off and then she typically nurses again at 7 a.m. on the other side and is up.

She goes down for her first nap around 8:45/9. Goes down for her second nap around 12/12:30 and her 3rd nap around 3:30 (on a PERFECT day).

Days like today, her third nap was at 2:45 and she only slept until 3:30. She wouldn't go down for a fourth mini nap around 5:00 like we tried so she was basically a hot mess for most of the evening.

We aim to have her in bed between 7:00 and 7:30.

By 5 months my first was on such a predictable routine and such a great sleeper. This kid is killing me.

DD usually takes a little nap later on in the afternoon/early evening and goes to bed around 7:30-8:00.  Lately, though, she's been really fighting those later afternoon naps and then is just beyond exhausted when its time to start bedtime.  This, in turn, makes her a tiny monster during dinner (we eat dinner around 6:30 just because DH doesn't usually get home until 6:00 - older DD is used to this schedule as she will usually nap until 4-5 in the afternoon).

It dawned on me yesterday that I think she's a tad bit screwed up because of the time change.  While it didn't mess up her night-time/wake time routine, I think its that late afternoon nap that got messed up.  Just a thought - I don't know what your LO's' routine was before time change.

FWIW - I feel the same way with my second kiddo - I feel like I totally cannot get her on a routine where I did with my first.  I keep trying though because my 3 year old is still on such a routine that I don't want to mess with her schedule.

DD starts the day around 7:00, naps at around 9 until 11, again at around 1, and then a half hour nap around 4 if the 1:00 nap was less than two hours (yesterday she didn't have the third nap because the second one went until 4!).  She goes to bed at 6:30.

That said, I think I have a high sleep needs baby. I love spending time with her and would love it if she stayed up more, but she really needs all that sleep to be her happy little self!  I originally wanted bedtime to be 7 or 7:30, but she just can't make it to that time without melting down.

For you, I think I would start with not going to your LO in the morning before 6:00, or maybe try for a quick feeding or diaper change and then back to bed to finish the night.  5:00 is really too early for any baby to be starting her day, and it might be throwing the whole rest of her day off.  I often hear my LO through the monitor before 6:00, but if I don't go in there she will always go back to sleep until around 7:00, sometimes even closer to 8:00 (though I try not to let her sleep that late unless I'm feeling extremely tired and don't want to get up myself).

  • ideally naps around 4ish to right around 5ish...but its a hard nap for us to get sometimes

bedtime is between 6:30-7:15ish depending on how long that last nap is and how is other naps were.  I try not to let him stay up longer than 2 hours at the end of the day...he usuallly goes down without a fight...

  • Thanks everyone. It's helpful to see what other people are doing.  It really seems like 2 hours of awake time is still her limit. Hopefully she'll start stretching it because going to sleep at 6:30 just isn't always an option.

do you co-sleep or is it a mistake that she falls asleep nursing?  I find that when I completely separate the nursing from the sleeping/napping the sleep is WAY better.

not sure how long your naps are but maybe see if you need more naps?  We USUALLY do 4x45 minute naps and it looks like this:

    up at 7ish-7:30

1st nap around 9 (after awake for 1hour 45 minutes) wakes up around 10

2nd nap around 11:30-12:00 (naps anywhere from 30min-1.5hours)

3rd nap around 2ish (same for nap length average)

4th nap 4ish...I try to have him awake by 5 so I can get him to bed at a decent hour

Out like a like by 7-7:15 usually.  He typically STTN anywhere from 8hours to 12 horus and is normally up for the day by 7ish

Not sure if that helps but its working for us right now...at least this week (lol)
