Camera recommendations?

I am very into taking pictures--lots of photos all over the house, extensive albums from my whole life, and love being in as well as taking pictures.

Right now, I have a very compact 16.1 megapixel s on y cy ber sho t. I've been pretty happy with the pictures, but it does better with natural lighting than with indoors. There is also some shutter lag which makes catching #2's elusive smiles nearly impossible. Overall, though, I have been happy with the ease of a point and shoot as well as the photo quality.

I have at least two friends that have this camera:

Ni k o n  C o o l pi x P 500

From what I have seen, it does very well in low-light conditions indoors and out. The price is pretty reasonable (as in, I don't mind spending a little bit more for a better camera, but I won't freak my freak if the camera accidentally is broken). DH and I have a baaad track record with dropping/breaking digital cameras, so I would hesitate to buy a truly expensive camera.

I like the portability of my tiny point and shoot since it easily fits in a pocket. I am the person who always has a camera, so the new, better camera is intended for situations where I want better photos or anticipate poor lighting. It would also be the camera to use at home. For activities out of the house, I'd probably be sticking with the tiny camera since I do my best to carry as little as possible (especially now that I'm toting a diaper bag for 2 little ones).

Thoughts on this camera? Recommendations? Any camera you'd think was a better choice based on my needs?

I'm flexible on price and willing to go a bit higher, as I have been lusting after a better camera for a while now.

I want a camera with an automatic setting, but I am interested in playing around with settings and learning a bit more in the future.

Re: Camera recommendations?

  • I'm not an expert at all, so hopefully someone else will chime in here.  I used to sell point and shoot cameras (I managed a gadget store, not a camera store) and we always got great feedback on the Nikon and Canon cameras.  It's been several years now, though.

You might consider buying one from Best Buy.  Their add-on "replacement guaranty" warrantee is totally awesome for stuff like this.  If you have an issue they'll either replace or service the camera, depending on the price point.  I've used it quite a few times over the years.

  • I don't know anything about Nikon, so I can't comment on the camera you're thinking about.

However, I have a canon point and shoot (I am pretty sure it's this one) and I love it.  I've also heard great things about the Canon Eos Rebel, which is a step up from my camera--but is too much camera for my needs.

  • MH and I just looked at the Nikon Coolpix L120 and it seems to be great and got some good reveiews. We have not gotten it yet though, so I can't share my personal experience at this point. My colleague recommended it to me and loves it.

I've had both a Nikon and a Canon in the past, and they were pretty good cameras. My current Sony is also a pretty good camera, but it was a gift so I didn't actually get to pick it out.

Does the warranty cover breakage due to dropping the camera? We have broken a couple of cameras through misadventure, and I would not expect a warranty to help us with that kind of problem.

Sadly, I think that any camera we buy will probably eventually get dropped before it has a chance to stop working on its own.  We are a bit clumsy in our house.

That looks similar to what I currently have. The Eos Rebel might be a little more camera than I need, but it could be up for consideration. I'm wanting something better than a good point and shoot, but not really an entry level professional camera.

That looks similar to the P500, but a little less expensive.

Argh--hopefully someone will come along who owns one of these type of cameras.

  • I was going to suggest the Canon G-series (i think the current one is G12 maybe?).  It's like a hybrid between a point and shoot and a DSLR.  Little to no shutter lag, but a less bulky than a true dSLR.

Looks like your nikon that you pictured is their version of that same lineup.  I think it'll be a good fit for you.  Stick with nikon if that's what you're used to - then the file names will all be similar, you've already got the software loaded, they'll likely take the same memory cards, etc.

I have it and am not a fan. This could be because I got a dud because all the review online are great. Could also be because I'm used to using my MIL's $800 dslr. IMO the camera takes crappy picture indoors or anytime you're not outside and kids are moving. Maybe I just can't figure out the settings but I regret not spending the money to just get an entry level dslr.

We have the best buy warranty and yes you can return and exchange for ANY reason. I asked. So if you drop it, the kid drops it, you get sand in it, anything. They'll fix it, replace it or you can just pay for the difference for an upgrade. I'm kinda hoping DS drops my camera so I can upgrade.

I'm actually not married to the idea of a Nikon at all.

I have owned (in order) the following digital point and shoot type cameras over the past 8 years: Canon, Nikon, Olympus X 2, Kodak, and Sony X 2.

Broke the Canon when I dropped it on a tile floor. The Nikon was super entry level but decent, so then I upgraded to Olympus #1. I pretty much wore out Olympus #1, which led to Olympus #2. Won the Kodak and haven't used it much, but it was free and works so I keep it around as a spare camera. Received the Sony as a gift from a relative who though I needed a better camera. Broke the Sony but liked it so I replaced it with the slightly improved version of the same model.

I didn't actually get to pick out the majority of the cameras that I have owned as most of them were given to me. This is my big opportunity to buy a really good camera, so I want to consider all of my options.

I was hoping to keep this under $600 or so, but can go higher for a better camera.

I don't know that I would use all of the settings of a dSLR, which is why I was leaning towards a hybrid between point and shoot and dSLR. It seems wasteful to pay for features that I won't use. I want to be able to take better pictures than I can take now.

The Nikon P500 is just what a couple of friends have, and they have been taking impressive photos. I am very open to another brand or type of camera. I really want to pick out something fantastic since I enjoy pictures so much.

Shutter lag is the thing that really kills me with my current camera. I also don't like how indoor photos aren't as sharp as those in natural light.

Would you pick the Canon G12 over the Nikon P500 or the other Nikon a prior person mentioned?

I'm definitely going to look at them before buying because we drop/break stuff all of the time. I've been hesitating on the expensive camera for that reason.

Thanks for the feedback on the camera. I know two people who love theirs, and I wanted to hear other opinions before making a decision.

This is what I wanted as well....I didn't want a dslr just yet but wanted a really nice camera to take good pics of A.

I got a Canon Powershot SX30 IS.  It's a great camera and takes very nice pictures.  There are tons of settings to play around with as well as automatic.  It also shoots HD videos which is nice.  We got it at Best Buy and bought the extended three year warranty thing.

The contract states that it won't cover accidental damage, neglect or misuse but in reality they've always swapped stuff out with no questions asked.  I don't go out of my way to tell them the story of how I clumsily destroy stuff, though.  And like PP said, it covers upgrades so I know of people that would drop their product on the ground in the parking lot outside so that they could upgrade to the cool new camera.  It's kinda ridiculous.
