Austin Babies

dr gro gono (long)

I used to go to W P I H...now i switched to OB GYN group of austin with dr gro gono...I have been twice in the last couple of weeks, trying to get annual done. The first time I waited almost 2 hrs and had to reschedule. This time I was the 1st appt after lunch and still waited an hour. Does anyone know if this is normal for her?

Also, I mentioned to her that my last cycle was normal...it stopped after 5 days, and then started again like 4 days later for 2 days and then quit. I have very regular cycles and have never had this happen. I mentioned that i was excersing alot more than normal. Her response was to put me on progesterone and to have a uterine biopsy to check for uterine cancer! What?! These both seem extremely aggressive to me. I could see if I had had multiple irregular cycles but I've only had one. Anyone else think this is crazy?

One last question: Anyone have any MD recs...I want to deliver at Seton Main. TIA

I don't know your medical history, but based on what you said this does seem kind of aggressive.  On the other hand, I'm sure there are plenty of women out there who wish their MDs would've been more aggressive and discovered the root of their problem sooner.  If you're not comfortable with the RX and having the biopsy definitely get a second opinion.  There's nothing wrong with that at all.

I love, love, love my doctor but she's south and delivers at Seton SW.  Lots of nesties adore Dr S eek er, but from what I've heard his wait times can be like what you experienced.

Good luck and I hope it is just the new exercise regimen.

  • Thanks for the reply. I am an otherwise healthy person...no prior medical hx. I think Now, that I am typing it out, I am definitely going to get a second opinion. The biopsy part...ok, if she was just very cautious, but I didnt like the fact that she just put me on a hormone for one irregular cycle. That seems wrong to me.

  • I'm all for testing but that does seem a little overkill.  Progesterone can have some super not fun side effects so seems strange to jump to that without testing.  Not sure why you left W PI H but I see Dr. Re ich there and love her.  Seriously love her.  She thinks outside the box on our issues but always gives us lots of information, options, and research.

  • I recommend Dr's Gooch (She is at ARC Medical Tower) and he is in the same building different practice.  I love, love, love Michelle!  She was caring and open and just great.  Her hubby and mine worked together.  He checked in on me when I delivered as well and he was just as good.

  • That seems pretty aggressive to me. . . did she do any other testing (like a pap) that would have led to the request for more in depth testing?

I go to the same practice, but see Dr Bra un stein (I followed her from her previous practice).  She generally runs about 15 min behind, but I've learned that Mondays are really bad for regular checkups, and later in the afternoons her timing gets more off, b/c she prioritizes people with urgent issues/pregnancy complications ahead.  Since being PG I've only had to wait on upwards of about 15 min.

I will also say - before we got pregnant, we had complications previously, and I had a few irratic/irregular cycles.  Dr. B didn't suggest any hormones, but just had me log/monitor the amount of bleeding and the frequency and to report back.

  • A pap doesn't show uterine cells, just cervical cells.

I'm a nurse. And ER nurse at that, so take this for what it's worth. She's a doctor. She's heard different stories told hundreds of different ways. Something about the way you told your story triggered in her head the tell-tale signs of the possibility for cancer. If we relied on every patient to just come out and say "hey, I think I might be having a heart attack" we wouldn't catch half of them. But it's the vague symptoms and our intuition that leads to the accurate diagnosis. If you don't trust your doctor's intuition, then you can seek a 2nd opinion.

When I first went to the ENT for my thyroid removal he asked about my sleep. I told him I always have slept horribly and frequently wake up with headaches. He then asked a few weird questions that were irritatingly unrelated to my thyroid. He then looked up my nose and accurately predicted that I probably didn't have enough airflow through my nasal passages. The CT confirmed it, I had the surgery and I sleep much much better now. He knew the questions to ask. He knew the signs. That's what makes him a doctor and me the patient =)

Now granted, when you're a hammer, everything looks like a nail right? But sometimes it IS a nail !! And I agree with the PP, you want an aggressive doctor in this area. Irregular bleeding is the #1 sign of "female" cancers - uterine, ovarian and cervical.

  • I've been a Dr. G patient for years - like 8 years or something.  I've only had to wait more than 20 minutes once and that's b/c she was in an emergency C-section (and I waited 2 hours then).  I will say I really like her as a doctor and have had great experiences with her.  And she is generally very laid back and despite going into pre-term labor w/ #2, she was not overly aggressive or doing things unnecessarily. If she's ordering tests, I'd be more inclined to say there was more going on than meets the eye and she's making sure all is ok.

Ditto on wait times and approach.  I have been going to her for almost 10 years and I adore her as a Dr. She had tons of great advice after my m/c, and I've always felt comfortable with her.  DH went with me to my m/c appt and was impressed as well about how and what she communicated, responding thoroughly to my questions and talking about the future.  She never once mentioned medication in preparation, so I don't think she's necessarily an Rx-Dr.

She is really responsive to hesitation and personal preferences as well, so maybe communicating your concerns would be helpful? If not, definitely go to someone you are more comfortable with.

A Pap can also detect glandular cells.  After DS was born, I had a pap that indicated abnormal glandular cells of unspecific significance (AGUS).  I can't recall offhand what the percentage is, but it's a high number of women who do end up with uterine cancer also had a result of AGUS. That doesn't mean, of course, that if you have an AGUS result that you have uterine cancer.

I'm just saying that Pap can show abnormalities in cells related to endocervical and uterine pathologies.

The follow-up protocol is an endocervical curettage and an endometrial biopsy. I had both done. Not horrible but not the most fun of my life.

To the OP:  I know it sounds extreme, but personally I would err on the side of caution. Uterine and ovarian cancers are tricky to diagnose and because irregular bleeding is a hallmark, it's best to get it checked out, especially if you're a very regular person.

If a patient were to have uterine or ovarian cancer and had it detected early, the prognosis for recovery (5 year) is good.  Late discovery and treatment is always a much poorer prognosis.

Get a second opinion, but certainly don't discount the rec for a biopsy. It's a short procedure that is somewhat uncomfortable but will yield more answers than a wait-and-see approach.

  • I've also been seeing her for years, probably since I moved here in '01.  I love her too.  She delivered my babies. I did get the feeling at times that she was a bit overly cautious, but I was also a "high risk" pregnancy patient and tend to prefer a more aggressive approach if there's even a hint of a problem.  I was all for the extra attention.  I will say that when I had problems with my weekly check-ins with the perinatal nurse, I addressed them with her and she allowed me to check in with her weekly instead.  Given that, I'm sure she's open to more thorough discussions and going a different route. I'd give her a call, maybe speak with her nurse.  When I've done that in the past, I usually got a call back from Dr. G later in the day. But if you're uncomfortable, I'd definitely get a second opinion on the matter.  Good luck!

ETA: I've only had a really long wait once, and it was due to her delivering a baby.

  • I'm one of Dr. G's patients. Her wait times have been much longer than normal this week because she has been spending half her time in Boston with her young son who is having open heart surgery. It is pretty inconvenient for all of her patients, but she has been super apologetic and her RN Lynne is wonderful if you need to see someone right away.

She does seem to be a bit aggressive to me too. If you want someone in the same practice try Dr. Goo ch .

Wow thoughts and prayers to her son.
