Parenting after a Loss

When do babies start to smile at you?

My LO is a little over a month.  He is starting to look at toys on his mobile and gives them a huge smile; however, when I put my face in front of him at the same distance, he starts looking all over the place.  I am guessing the smaller toys are easier to see.  When did your baby start to look at your face and smile at you?

  • I can't remember when DD1 did, but DD2 did right about 1 month.

  • D probably started doing that round a month.  Started out sporadic, now is more frequent.

Have you tried smiling at him when you're trying to elicit a smile?  They sometimes mimic mouth movements at that age (smiles, open/close mouth, etc).

I also got some smiles from LO while nursing!  I totally love it.  He has the cutest smiles I have ever seen and cannot wait for him to smile at me!

Thats when D started smiling (in general, not at me) as well.  I've noticed he's giggling there now so I'm hoping its a precursor for that as well.

This was pretty much us as well, although it may have taken longer than that for DD to be more free wheeling with the smiles.  I remember starting to freak a little because it seemed like everyone else was seeing consistent smiles by 6w.

Once DD started smiling, it made me feel so much more connected with her & made her fussiness (she is NOT an "easy" baby) so much easier to deal with.
