2nd Trimester

Travelling

I'm flying this Sunday (I'll be 16 weeks) from West Virginia to Orlando. I know its safe to fly at this point in my pregnancy, so my question is...Do I call and inform my OB I'll be flying? Also, we're planning to spend some time at Disney World...obviously there are rides I shouldnt ride, but there are some things I can do, right? I wish I would've known about this trip at my last appt. but it was a last minute plan. What do you think?

Re: Travelling

  • No need to tell your OB.  I flew to Los Angeles and went to Disneyland at 11 weeks.  Just don't go on any roller coasters.
  • Loading the player...
  • I will be flying from Omaha, NE to Miami on Saturday, then going on a 7 day cruise, and I will be just about 15 weeks when I fly. My OB said flying at this point is safe, especially on a shorter flight. Her only suggestion was for the cruise, and having a stock pile of Dramamine lol.

As far as the rides in Disney... I want to see the responses, as when we get back from our cruise, we are driving up the coast and going to orlando for a few days, so I would like to know what kind of rides are there now (havent been there in 20 years haha) that are good for a pregnant woman.

  • I agree with the PPs. I've flown several times in the last few months, and I've never contacted my OB about it.

As far as the rides go, I'd avoid the ones that have the warnings saying they're not safe if you're pregnant. I don't like to take any chances if I can help it.

    Have fun!

  • No, you don't need to call your doctor.  There are a few things you can go on.  Check the board outside the ride line, it will say if pregnant women shouldn't ride.  These ones I know are out based on Disney's recs:

Magic Kingdom - Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Splash Mountain, Goofy's Barnstormer, Space Mountain, Tomorrowland Indy Speedway

Epcot - Test Track and Mission Space

Hollywood Studios: Tower of Terror, Rock 'n' Roller Coaster, Star Tours, Toy Story

Animal Kingdom: Dinosaur, Kali River Rapids, Kilimanjaro Safaris, Expedition Everest

  • If you're concerned then you can call. There usually aren't any issues with flying at 16 weeks.

I don't know that I would ride much, though...

  • My advice would be to call..but just to get a copy of your medical records.  It's a good idea to keep those with you when travelling.

  • I went to China at 10 weeks (booked way before our little surprise happened).  Doctor said it was perfectly fine.  Just a few things to know, which I should have planned for.  Take frequent rests and don't get overheated.  Drink plenty of water, especially on the plane.  Take the list of drugs you can take when pregnant just in case you get sick while on vacation and maybe take some medication like Tylenol and Tums so you are not trying to find a drug store in the magic kindom :)
