Biting

Man, it sucks to be the parent of the biter!  I really thought we were past this w/ Gavin.  He has never been the biter before (that I know of) but he has been on the receiving end a few times.  Today was the first time I got a report that he bit someone- on the cheek!  I feel so awful... isn't he too old for this?!  He got a big lecture in the car today and a no technology evening (this is a HUGE punishment for my little geek).  I think he got it, but still... I feel horrible.  Not looking forward to Sophie moving into this stage either!

Re: Biting

  • Oh I hear you.  It feels horrible to be the parent of the biter.  To my knowledge E has never been bitten but he has done it several times here at school. I have told his teacher to come and get me if he does something really bad like that.  The times it has happened I had to struggle not to tear up myself because he knew he was in trouble and he felt bad afterwards.  His teacher brought him to my room sobbing.  He kept saying "sorry, not nice to bite" over and over.  It broke my heart for him and then I had to be tough and lecture him.  I also comforted the poor friend he bit a lot in front of him to show him.  It is so frusterating.  I was thankful to at least be able to deal with it in the moment because when he was younger it was so hard to follow up later.  Hopefully Mr. Gavin learned his lesson!  I will say we have had this happen in both the 3 and 4 year old classes so not out of the norm at all.

  • MJD is the biter in his class and I HATE IT!  We were on a good role for a while, but last week they said it started back up.  It drives me crazy, and he doesn't do it at home only at school, typically when we wants something that another kid has or if on the playground and big kids get in his way.  Lovely right.  I'm hoping that the more words he learns the better it will get but right now his teachers do their best to stop it.  I feel our pain all the way!
