Mini Crib vs Standard Crib

So I have been looking for a crib and come across several neat looking mini cribs that look to save space but also convert to a twin bed, does anyone have one or any thoughts on the pros and cons of this? Thanks!

Re: Mini Crib vs Standard Crib

  • I was asking around about this as well. Everyone told me to remember that babies grow and that some mini cribs will only hold up to a certain weight. If you are thinking about a mini crib, just take this into account. I personally would hate to get something to save space and then find out that it won't hold little one once they're not so little anymore. Just do the research, and I'm sure that you will love whatever you decide on! Good luck on finding the perfect crib for you!

  • We have a tiny house and are just going with a standard crib. I can't imagine the space saved is all that much, and I would hate to have to shop for special bedding.
  • Can you find sheets etc easily for the mini crib? I would just go with a regular crib.

  • I was told while the mini crib is great for saving space the baby will grow out of it sooner than a full size and you'll have to spend more money in the long run on crib/toddler beds.  After I saw them in person and thought about the baby growing I decided to ditch the mini.

  • Mini cribs are basically the size that European cribs are and they seem to have managed  :)  When I was reading about them, most people reported that their kid fit in it just fine to at least 18 months, usually 24-ish.  Plenty of kids I've babysat couldn't stay in their crib to0 long past that because they started to try to climb out.

Also, you need to get a conversion to a toddler bed regardless of what size crib you get, so I don't see how it is more expensive.

Lastly, the full sized cribs convert to a full sized bed.  Those mattress are MUCH more expensive and they take up a lot of space.  If you don't have a large enough room for one, you could end up purchasing a twin bed after all.

It is a little harder to find sheets, but places like BRU sell them and you can easily find them online.

  • We are thinking of going with the mini-crib, only b/c we live in a 1 br apartment right now, and it will be the only way to fit a crib at all in our bedroom.
