2nd Trimester

Anxiety

I know that pregnancy can be a very stressful time and some anxiety is normal, but has anyone else had new anxiety issues develop? It's very odd and I wrote it off at first, but it's getting annoying! I am normally very laid back and always preferred action movies over romance, but now I can't get through any of them. Turning off shows like Dexter or Criminal Minds doesn't bother me as they can be quite sick, but I couldn't get through Troy or Gladiator, either! It doesn't seem to be the violence... I get stuck on one detail and how horrible it is like "oh no! Maximus' family was murdered and he was forced to become a gladiator" then proceed to sit there and panic about it! I start shaking, can't breathe and get nauseous. I'm guessing I'll just have to watch the Disney Channel until the baby is born, but am curious to see if anyone has had similar experiences?

Re: Anxiety

  • I am normally a very laid back person, throughout this pregnancy I am very intense and have what I believe to be "bad anxiety". I'm sure its hormones and the stress of knowing I am going to have another child, i am very nervous about how my life will change (my girls are 5 & 6 yrs). I can't watch some of my normal shows because they stress me or creep me out. & I get so high strung about the smallest fixable things :  hoping this will all go away soon.

  • I have struggled with Generalized anxiety disorder for 11 years now and I can honestly tell you that I have to be very careful about what I watch on TV and my movies are pretty much limited to PG and PG-13 (my poor husband hates it!!) I'm sure it is just your hormone levels causing you to react to the stresses of the movie (it kind of feels like you are almost experiencing what the actor is portraying). I would just avoid what is causing you to feel these panicked feelings and bring it up the next time you see your doctor.

  • I also suffer from Generalized Anxiety Disorder.  Anxiety can become life consuming and is very difficult to handle, especially while you're pregnant.

Have you tried yoga or meditation?  Also, if you know certain things may trigger your anxiety, avoid them at all costs.  Now is not the time to try to be brave and confront these things. If your anxiety comes out of nowhere, consider journaling in an effort to find out the causes.

If you still find your anxiety effecting your daily life after trying these things, please talk to your doctor.  They may have other ideas or place you on medications to help.  I currently take anti-anxiety medication, even though I am pregnant, and it has helped tremendously.  Best of luck.
