I just got a job offer (it's a verbal offer, contingent upon background check, drug test, etc.).
I just found out I am 5 weeks pregnant. I wasn't or didn't know I was pregnant when I went through the interview process a few weeks ago (3 rounds).
My questions:
1) How do I tell the hiring manager (or the company recruiter) that I am pregnant? I feel that I should tell them upfront for courtesy before I start the job. (I've scheduled my first OB appt already, but it's not until Nov 22). How should I say it? When should I say it? (After the background check clears and we start talking start dates?)
2) I'm currently negotiating to start in mid-Jan (so I give my resignation to my current employer Jan 2) I was hoping I could take advantage of the 7 business day paid time-off in December at my current job. I also have vacation plans for that week. The new employer is trying to see if they can accomodate this, but they really want me to start in December. Perhaps with the pregnancy, I should just start early?
Re: How do I communicate this?
1) I wouldn't say anything. Unless you feel being pregnant is going to prevent your from doing the job. I wouldn't say anything until you've been there a while and proven yourself, but that's just me.
2) It would be nice if it works out the way you want it to. However, if this is a position you really want I'd work with them but make your vacation plans clear if you've already paid for your trip.
1) I also wouldn't tell them. If you don't have something is writting, it would be easy for them to say something didn't check out or that the start dates is too much of an issue for them and they went with the 2nd choice.
2) I would be flexable, if you really want the job. It would be great to use that paid time off from your current employer but if the new job means a lot to you I would be willing to start in December.
