Almost 4 year old DS having tonsils out...

He is having his tonsils out on Tuesday and I was just wondering if anyone has any experience with this? How long did it take to recover? If he has them out on Tuesday will he be able to go to a birthday party on Saturday or is that crazy?

 Thanks,

  • DD had hers out at 3.5 and she was down a good 4-5 days.  She was pretty willing to eat and drink though, as long as it was the right temp and texture.  I know other kiddos that have refused to eat/drink and had quite a time coming back around, some even had to be readmitted to the hospital for fluids etc, which delayed the recovery time.

I wouldn't plan on making the party, but I'd still play it by ear.  He might surprise you and feel up to it.

A side note... If you can, you may want to record his voice now, just to have it in case it changes.  DD's really changed after the surgery and it was noticeable immediately.  She also had her adenoids out though, so that may have made the difference.

  • DS1 had his out when he was 7. He did really great. I think they suggested he stay out of school for a week. They don't want them running around and breaking loose the scabs. The worst part was when he came out of surgery. The anesthesia was wearing off and he freaked out. Kept screaming..About 2-3 hours and several Popsicles later he went home.

  • My son was just shy of three when his came out and I couldn't keep him down. The day he had them out he was out riding his bike. I found sleeping was the hardest because I think his throat would dry out an get sore and he Aldo didn't have his activities to keep his mind off it. I think I would wait and see how he feels that Saturday . If you keep up on his medicine and he realizes he won't be able to eat most of the food there I think going for an hr or two is ok, but you need to be ready to take him home if he crashes.
  • A family member of mine had to get her daughter's removed at 3 years old. She was potty trained before. She actually still knows she is supposed to tee-tee in the potty but does not get up in the night (like she was doing) to go. So she has regressed on that, but other than that I don't think they had any problems with it.

If your LO is up to it and wants to go to the party, she should be able to. IF you think she is capable of doing so. GL :)
