2nd Trimester

Level 2 Sonoram abnormalities

I'm currently 23 wks along with my second pregnancy and so far it's being completely different than my first.  I went for my level 2 sonogram a few weeks ago (it's a girl!) and they found a few abnormalities.

First, they couldn't find the right kidney. They scheduled me in for a Level 1 sono & feel they saw BBGirl has a pelvic right kidney.  As per the doctor she will be able to have a normal life, even if it's only one kidney she's born with.

The other thing they found was a small cyst in her ovary.   I've been told it's minimal & they'll follow up with observing it at the 28wk sono.

I've been told to not worry about as everything will be monitored and it should not affect the baby. My concern isn't so much the pregnancy but one she's born how that affects her life.

I'd like to know if any of you ladies have had a similar experience or have had babies with the same "abnormalities"?

Re: Level 2 Sonoram abnormalities

  • I'm not that far along yet, but the two issues they found are not life-threatening or even likely to have a substantial impact on the baby at all.  I know it's hard to not worry, but I think if the doctor's don't think it's a big concern, it's probably all going to be just fine.

Just about every woman's ovaries get cysts from time to time and the vast majority resolve on their own without causing any pain or issues (which is why most people never even know they have them!).

If she really does only have one kidney, it might just mean you have to monitor sugar intake because she would only have one kidney filtering instead of two.   A lot of people get by with only one functioning kidney though, and doctors are very well-versed in how to monitor them.  And it might just be that they had a bad angle on the u/s and just couldn't see the other one.

    Hang in there!

  • Honestly I sort of wonder if the missing kidney is a more evolved trait... since apparently people can get along just fine with one kidney !!! Haha!!! Definitely adds stress to pregnancy and stuff, but keep your head up, as it sounds like you've got a totally healthy baby girl who may encounter issues in her life, but not anything you can't handle.
  • I met a girl on here who only had 1 kidney. She recently gave birth to her own beautiful baby girl with no complications! you can live an absolutely normal life with 1 kidney. That's why they can have living donors for kidney transplants. I know it's not ideal, but try not to worry! 1 kidney is plenty!
