Infertility

home from ER

Hey guys, I just got home from my retrieval. We got 10 eggs, which is about what we were expecting. We will do a split batch of 1/2 ICSI 1/2 regular IVF. I don't know yet how many of the eggs were mature. We would really like to do a day 5 transfer, but of course we have no idea what our situation will be yet with regard to embryos. My RE suggested the possibility of transferring 1 embryo on day 3 and a second embryo on day 5. Has anyone heard of this before? I guess by transferring one on day 3 and then letting the rest try to grow to blastocyst, it would be a bit of an insurance policy if we end up with nothing come day 5.

Overall everything went very smoothly. I was really lucky because I was the first retrieval of the morning, so there was no waiting around at all - amazing compared to my previous clinic where we would spend hours and hours waiting around for procedures. Also, my friend T had her retrieval right after mine, so it was so nice to be there with a friend!

Re: home from ER

  • 10 eggs is great! What is the rational for doing half ICSI and half regular? Just curious. I haven't heard of a day three and day five transfer, but it sounds exciting! Good luck to you and those eggs (to embryos) in the next couple days:-)

Thanks, ahh! We did a split-batch cycle for our first IVF because the RE felt since we were unexplained and didn't have a proven fertilization record, we shouldn't take any chances. It turned out our embryos fertilized just as well naturally that cycle as they did with ICSI, but apparently our sperm weren't so hot. This time again the RE encouraged us to attempt to fertilize half by ICSI just in case.

  • That number sounds great! I have never heard of the 3 dt and the 5 dt but it sounds like you may be getting the benefits of both. Good luck!
  • hi cutie :)

10 eggs is great, praying for awesome fert report.

a couple of years ago a nestie (on saif now), transferred on day 3 and day 5, she got BFP and b/g twins from that cycle.

other than that example i can't think of anyone else who staggered transfer.

    GL!

  • Congrats - 10 eggs is great!  We are also undiagnosed and did ICIS on half - it just seems like a smart way to go since we have no diagnosis (and for all that we're paying since we are OOP).

I've got my fingers crossed for you that you get a great fert report tomorrow!  I've never heard of the idea of a 3 and 5 day transfer but the logic makes complete sense.

Rest up - you deserve it!

  • Congrats, that's great news!!!!! I've never heard of doing 1 on day 3 & 1 on day 5 but why not??!! If your RE suggested it then they must've done it before. I say go fog it if it's an option. I hope you get a great fert report!! Rest up!

    Good luck going forward :o)!!

  • Good luck, hon!!

My RE offered to do that early on in my IVF history.  But, it wasn't his first choice.  So, I did 5 day transfers on my first two cycles (even though three embryos was the most I ever had) and then ended up doing a 2 day on my third.  If you do a 3 day transfer of one, you could ask for AH.  It would be another benefit of a 3 day transfer.  Best of luck with whatever you decide!!
