How do you know if you have a yeast infection?

Re-post from Feb. 2012

I had one early on in the pregnancy that I didn't even know about...they found it when I went to the dr.

Maybe TMI, but I've been having a lot of discharge that is like an off-white color.  And, it just feels weird down there.  It's not itchy or burny, but it feels different.

My next OB apt isn't until next Thursday, so I'm just trying to figure out if it's an infection or just excess discharge (I haven't had this symptom up until this point, so maybe that's it).

Any info you have would be helpful and appreciated...TIA

  • An off-white discharge is pretty normal.  I have it slightly but there have been other posts from women who have to wear pantyliners because it's a lot heavier for them.  I think a yeast infection discharge smells funky, but I've never had one so I'm not sure at all.

Either way, better be safe than sorry, let your doc know what's going on.

  • You would know.   I am going to say that most likely you do not have one from your description.

FWIW,  I have been feeling off down there too- sort of feels like it is swollen with a lot of pressure?

  • I have felt off down their too.  I told my doctor and she said everything look fine.  I saw a different doctor at the practice 2 months later and found out I had an infection all along.  you might have to push for your doctors to listen to you!
  • I've had a yeast infection 3 times in my life and each time, I knew.  It felt like someone hit my vag with a hot curling iron on high then rubbed it with poison ivy.  It is incredibly uncomfortable.  Not to mention you get the cottage cheese discharge...awesome.

However, you could have a bacterial infection.  Those can happen during pregnancy but can cause PTL so I would let your doc know.  Usually, they have an odor and a gray discharge; I had one at 16 weeks with no symptoms.

  • Yeah....have your doctor check it out anyways just to be safe....but, I would say, if you are not sure if you have one, then you don't have one.

Mine aren't so much characterized by too much discharge, but the burning and itching is unmistakeable. It's especially bad right after you go to the bathroom. It's like the pee makes your vag lips and butt feel tender. And then it aggravates it when you wipe.

Sorry if that's TMI, and not very eloquent. All I'm saying is, you would probably know!
