I don't post here much but I was wondering if anyone's LO goes to the Burkett Center/Institute preschool in Birmingham? My DS was recently diagnosed with autism and his doctor has mentioned him starting preschool here when he is 3. I cannot find any information on the preschool aspect online. The only information is on the actual Jeff Co school that is K-12. Thanks
First of all, I am sorry for the diagnosis! Second, I have my master's in special education and did part of my practicum at Burkett. When I was there, it was summer, so I did not see the usual preschool, but the teachers I worked with were great. I definitely encourage you to place him in a preschool program. Make sure that whatever program you choose takes children with disabilies, and typical children. I strongly believe that they benefit from one another.
My sister has Rett Syndrome and attended the Hand in Hand program at UCP (on Lakeshore) for preschool and attends the UCP adult day-program now. I would definitely check into sending him there...they are WONDERFUL. https://www.ucpbham.com/our-programs/hand-in-hand.html
I also did part of my practicum at Mitchell's Place, which is completely designed for children with autism. They are also wonderful, and it would be a top choice to look into...I would actually recommend them first. https://mitchells-place.com/programs/early-learning-program/
Allie ~ 01/26/09 ~ 7 lbs, 9 oz ~ 20.75 in.
& Amelia ~ 03/16/11 ~ 8 lbs, 1 oz ~ 21 in.

Thank you so much!! DS's psychologist actually used to be the director at Mitchell's Place and his OT and SLP both previously worked there as well. I will look into them and UCP. I've heard great things about them as well but didn't even think to check there. I'm still getting used to everything. I'm hoping to find a part time program as I don't want to put him in full-time preschool at this point (I'm a SAHM).
