Breastfeeding

Pain meds and antibiotics

It looks like I will be taking Percocet and Augmentin for several more weeks due to a large infection from my c-section.  My doctor knows that I am breastfeeding and says these are safe, but I am getting nervous about exposing my baby to all of this for such a long period of time.  WWYD?  Not worry about it and continue BFing?

Re: Pain meds and antibiotics

  • What does your pedi say? My MW has prescribed drugs for me to take and she said they were fine to take while BFing, but pedi had a different opinion. Pedi suggested a different antibiotic and my MW called it in. However, it was for a small infection. If you have a "large" infection, you may need an aggressive antibiotic. In terms of pain, I know this sounds crazy, but can you live with the pain without the percoset? My friend was on painkillers after her c-section and her BF baby was always lethargic. As soon as she got off of them, her LO perked up.

My pedi was fine with it before,  but that was when I thought it would just be a few weeks.  Now we are looking at 4-8 more weeks.  Before the infection I had tapered off the pain meds, but unfortunately the pain meds are a necessity now.  My incision is open and deep with a vacuum attached and I have to have it repacked every two days.  I have been told multiple times to stay on top of the pain meds.  Sad
