Soft markers-was I misinformed???

Hi guys,

Recap- at 16 wks drs saw a CPC on the brain, said it is often found in healthy babies but also said it was associated with Tri 18. They said it was NOT associated with downs. There were no other markers ( rocker bottom feet, etc...) which there almost always are to indicate Tri 18.

At 19 wks they found a bright spot on the heart, which also is found in many normal pregnancies (they said they see 2 per week), but can be associated with downs. I asked my dr, the genetic counselor and the US dr if this and the spot on the brain have ANY coorealation. All three answered no. One would indicate tri 18 while the spot on the heart would indicate possible downs. Again they said the cyst on the brain has nothing to do with downs.

However, I read on the post today that someone was told a CPC is a marker for downs. Now Im more worried since I had a CPC and a spot it IS downs vs "unlikely"

Can someone clarify? Was I misinformed??!

  • I don't have any expertise on this at all, but I would go with what your doctors say.  If you think it's going to bother you not knowing for sure, maybe you would want to consider an amnio to put your mind at ease?  In any event, good luck - Chances are really, really good that everything is fine.

  • The High Risk doctor and my regular doctor said that CPC was a soft marker for TRI 18 and the bright spot on the heart was a soft marker for Downs. Most of what I have read has confirmed this. I had three soft markers of Chrom. defects, but the doctor seemed optimistic since everything on the baby other then the cpc the bright spot on the heart and slightly abnormal size of kidney tube. I would relax(easier said then done), More then likely your baby could be totally healthy. Trust your doctor.

  • My daughter had both CPC and a spot on her heart - my OB did tell me that they were soft markers for downs as well as other Trisomy's but not to worry because they are just that - soft markers.

My daughter was born with no Trisomy's.
