Well, I found some stats that I thought were really interesting during my read-every-baby-book challenge
This one comes to you from The Baby Whisperer by Tracy Hogg who is a real-life preemie mom! Her babe was seven weeks early so it was nice to read her [too] short chapter on prems. I wish I'd known this when DS was in NICU - I would have felt comforted - however, I can also see this alarming other parents.
It's especially cool to know how very much every day counts!!
She includes the following table on page 244:
"A baby's chances for survival increase 3-4 percent per day between 23 and 24 weeks and 2-3 percent per day between 24 and 26 weeks. After 26 weeks, because survival rate is already high, the daily rate of increase is not as significant."
Survival Rates for Preemies (based on infants in NICU)
23 w 10-35%
24 w 40-70%
25 w 50-80%
26 w 80-90%
27 w more than 90%
30 w more than 95%
34 w more than 98%
Re: You know how we are always saying how much every day we keep them in counts? (might be sensitive for
BFP#2 3/16/11, beta 138; 4/12 Baby/HB DS born 9/10/11 at 29w4d due to partial abruption and PTL
BFP#3 8/19/13 Another boy! 17P, modified bedrest and Nifedipine helped us have a termie! DS2 born 4/19/14 at 38w5d.
Interesting information. The thought that every day counted is what kept me going when I was in the hospital. I was admitted at 24w0d and was told by the neo that they had about a 10% chance at that point because my dumba$$ peri thought they were only measuring 22 weeks in size (he was wrong). It seemed all along that 28 weeks was the magic number we were aiming to get past.
