Too early for swelling?

Hello,

I'm FTM so I'm not really sure about this, but I'm very swollen my feet and ankles are so swollen they hurt.  They don't get better with rest and just seem to worsen.  I'm only about 23 weeks, is this normal so early??  I'm a bit concerned because I also get dizzy spells.  I had a an ultrasound yesterday and the baby looked good.  I'm just curious if anyone else is experiencing swelling so early??

Re: Too early for swelling?

  • When I was pregnant with my son, I started getting a bit of on and off ankle swelling around 20 weeks.  It was never bad until after 34 weeks.  Sitting around too much made it worse I think.  Until the very end, drinking lots of fluids, walking and then elevating my legs while sitting helped.

You should probably tell your OB or midwife.

  • That is happening to my good friend. And she is about 22 weeks ask well... her mother had the same problem during her pregnancies... she has been putting her feet up in the evening with ice... I think the salt has an effect ... and drink lots of water!

  • Definately call your dr and let them know. They will probably have you come in and start watching you closer for preeclampsia. I had sudden severe swelling that started at 33wks with DD in my feet and legs. I was just going to wait it out a bit but my coworkers told me to call and the dr wanted to see me right away. They watched me very closely for preeclampia but I ended up going into labor on my own at 36wks.Between now and when you see your doctor drink lots of fluids and put your feet up as much as you can.

Extra fluids actually help you get rid of swelling unless there is something in your body causing it.

  • It's okay...mine have been swelling since about 21 weeks.  Try putting your feet up above your heart when you go to bed at night.  Mine are always huge by the end of the day, and the only way to get them to go down is to keep them up all night.

My cousin had a baby about a year ago, and from 22 weeks and for the rest of the pregnancy, her feet were HUGE (all the time, no matter what she did)!!!!  To the point that she would wear crocs and her feet would pop through the holes.  Her dr. said it was normal for some people.

Still talk to your dr. at your next apt, but I would say it's probably normal.

  • I have had swelling in my left foot only for about a week. I went to the doctor yesterday and she said the baby is sitting on a blood vessel on that side which is causing the swelling. She said as long as I have no pain behind my knee she isn't too worried at this point and just to keep my feet elevated when I get home at night. Seriously my ankle/foot is gigantic!
