I think everyone has "that name"--one that they hate, that everyone else seems to love. Personally, I don't see the appeal of Claire or Carys at all. But other people like them, and it's not big deal. I can deal with legitimate names that are spelled right even if I don't love them.
I had never heard it until the character was introduced on Degrassi. Declan Coin. He was rich and kind of snobby. And another character (Claire) had a crush on him and wrote Twilight-esque stories about him... so now I associate the name with a rich, snobby kid, or a vampire. Not my favorite, but I don't HATE it.
Hmm. I really like it. DS was going to be Declan but we changed our minds at the last minute. DS #2, if we have one, will very likely be Declan. I like it.

Are you prounouncing it correctly? DECK-Lin, not De-Clan. I was pronouncing it wrong the first time I saw it, and thought it was the weirdest name ever. Once I figured it out, I really liked it.
Or you could just plain not like it. That's okay, too.
I just want to give you a world as beautiful as you are to me.
I was just thinking this a few moments ago as well. I think of it as a fad name. I think part of it is that from a non Gaelic looking pronounciation, it looks like you would pronounce the clan part which just throws people off. I also put in the same camp as Carys...just NMS at all.....

Yeah, this name has absolutely zero appeal to me, too, but it is a legitimate name and I can't like them all.
To me, this is a name that you would say "NMS" to. I don't think it's terrible, it's not made-up or misused, it doesn't have awful connotations, it's just a name I don't care for because of my own personal taste.

Thank you for this!! I have definitely been pronouncing it wrong and thought it was awful. But I like the REAL pronunciation of it. Very cute.

I'm one of the ladies who absolutely love the name. I met a Declan from Dublin when I was 19 and just fell in the love with the name. I like the sound and I think it flows quite nicely off the tongue, particularly in Ireland. We can't use it, though, because DH is actually from England and doesn't think it makes any sense to use Irish/Gaelic/Welsh/Scottish names at all. Even if we did meet in Dublin.

I'm not a fan either. I don't see the appeal of Declan, Liam or Aidan. Although, I think my dislike of Liam comes from a boy I went to school with. He was just a weird kid. I even remember when my friend was thinking of names for his son 6 years ago, I vehemently tried to talk him out of Liam.

LOL! A converter!
My sister thought it was pronounced Dee-Clan too but even when I corrected her she thinks it is a horrendous name. I told her she has a few years to get used to it and I don't want to hear any more about it.
Re: What is up with Declan?
I am with you am I missing something? It doesn't sound and/or looks pretty on paper.
Don't get it.
Word.
I see Claire, I hear clay.

Haha so was I and I could not understand the appeal at all.
Once I figured out how to say it, I liked it.
