I just got home from my 6 week postpartum check up with the OB. I had the IUD paraguard placed. I was cleaning out my purse and saw the pamphlet the nurse gave me about paraguard so I decided to read it (big mistake). I had wondered what would happen if I got pregnant with it in and it goes on and on about how it will probably cause miscarriage, increases the risk of ectopic pregnancies, or even death (although for some reason that freaks me out less than the chance of another miscarriage?? lol). I can't imagine going through one more loss, let alone one that would basically be my fault. Ugh. I did do research on this before I got it but getting pregnant with it in hadn't occured to me until today (I blame this on being sleep deprived and the residual effects of pregnancy brain). I'm tempted to call my OB back and have it removed. Talk me down from the ledge, please!
I'm going through a similar thing. I haven't gotten an IUD put in yet, but that is our plan (an by "our", I pretty much mean dh). I'm a little freaked by it myself. I know that the chances of it happening are soooooo slim, but I'm the mother of a 1 in 2,000,000 so I don't put to much stock in to chances any more.
I say if you're not 100% comfortable, at least speak with your OB about it. She might be able to say something to either comfort your fears or she will suggest removal. Either way, it's always good to hear it from the doc as opposed to reading it from a pamphlet (at least, I think).

Ever since finding out about my clotting disorders I've been hesitant to take hormonal BC, so I understand your reaction. You have to be comfortable with your decision.
Not to sound like a jerk, but why would you have a device placed in your uterus without reading about it? Or at least discussing the risk with your OBGYN?

I'll be honest, this is why I will not personally go the IUD route. But that is MY comfort level.
You have to decide your own comfort level, there is certainly no "wrong" answer here. I would call your OB and go over everything, your concerns, and see what they have to say.
Go from there.
this. Good Luck figuring out what works for you.

She did read but missed the risks if pregnancy occurs.
If it makes you feel better, call your ob. They will tell you about their opinion. I have the Mirena, I like it. I did have an u/s check to make sure it was placed correctly. To be honest, that made me feel 100% sure this is the right thing for us.

Thank you, I DID read about it. And I did discuss it with my OB and this never came up. If I wanted responses like that, I would've posted on the 0-3 month board. I came to this one b/c I felt like it was less abrasive and judge-y. Guess I was wrong.

Once again, see if your ob would be willing to do an u/s to make sure it is in correctly. It made me feel a whole lot better about not becoming pregnant.

Hey, calm down hun. Only one person said that. The rest of replies were trying to be helpful. I know you're spazzing out but this board is trying to help.
Im really surprised that your doctor didn't say anything to you though.
I know nothing about iuds but if you're not comfortable with the risks, talk with your doc about other options.

I can absolutely understand why that bothers you, it bothers me too which is why I didn't get an IUD. They freak me out for some reason. I'm probably overreacting, but that's just my personal view. You might just want to think about it, sleep on it, weigh the pros and cons of being on that, maybe review some more options.
The risk of m/c is the exact reason I won't get an IUD. This probably isn't helpful, but a friend of mine did get pg, the pg was ectopic. She lost the baby and her tube. That terrified me so we are using FAM (I can't be on hormonal b/c). I would talk to your OB.

Goondess? Really, over one snarky post? Now you are over reacting!
I'm with Scout. This is why I didn't get an IUD. I think it would be the perfect solution for us, except that I just cannot add an additional risk of m/c. We use FAM and lots of condoms. I do think your OB was being very irresponsible not to bring up the risk of pregnancy with an IUD.
Re: Please tell me I'm over-reacting!
I think the chances of pregnancy with one are very rare. Of course, it is not a good situation if it does happen, but it's extremely rare.
However, if you are uncomfortable with the risk, then I would have it removed and use another method.
