Multiples

Asthma :(

This isn't really a multiples related question, but I thought I would ask you all.  One of my girls has had a few colds recently (we've just chalking it up to being in Daycare).  About a month ago we took her to the pedi because she was wheezing a bit.  The pedi had her get a chest x-ray and just diagnosed her with Bronchiolitis.  Which is basically supposed to pass on its own...which it did.

Anyway, she started coming down with a cough again on Friday and we ended up taking her to Urgent Care on Sunday because she was coughing so much.  The Dr. said it was just a cold, but since she heard a little rattling in her chest, prescribed her an antibiotic.  I took her to the pedi again today since she's been wheezing pretty badly since yesterday, and the pedi believes she has asthma.  Ugh, a 5 mo with asthma...so sad. :(

We have to give her breathing treatments and prednizone and go back to the pedi in a week.  I was just wondering if anyone else had this experience with a really young LO, and if they ended up growing out of it, or at least getting better.  I just feel so terrible for my poor little girl!

Re: Asthma :(

  • Gibby was Dx with cough variant asthma this year- since he had 3 years that his cough got bad when the weather got cold - the doc said this is what it likely is.

he has an inhaler that we use when he's having a hard time- and it does help.

our pedi said most kids with this outgrow it - so i'm not that concerned.  It's only bad in the cold weather for him.

I used to be Goldie_locks_5 but the new nest is so screwed up that I was forced to start over.

  • I think it's really RAD (reactive airway disease) if it's triggered by colds/viruses, but whatever the case, my boys have it. We got a nebulizer when they were about 6 months old, so I guess it started then, but it didn't get bad until they were about 13 months old (first ER visit.) Now, at almost four, they still get daily inhaled steroid treatments and then albuterol when they have a cold. I think by the end of the winter we'll be done, because I think they've basically outgrown it at this point. Hopefully your daughter won't get as bad as mine have.

  • Yup, unfortunately it looks like both of my boys have asthma.  We struggled with bronchiolitis off and on all last winter and then eventually one of my boys was hospitalized with RSV, it was awful.  We also do nebulizer treatments and have done prednizone before.

Right now, we just started back up with nebulizing my boys with pulmecort (not sure how it's spelled) twice a day to try to keep their lungs in the best shape we can for flu season.  I don't know if that will be a life long thing or not but this winter and last winter, we will nebulize them twice a day throughout the winter.  If/when they develop a cough then we also add in albuterol and treat with that every 4 hours.  My boys were fine all spring and summer so their asthma seems to be the kind that really flares up with sickness so that's why our pediatrician wants us to start the daily nebulizer treatments again now.

My boys are only 18 months old so I can't really say if they will grow out of it but I definitely hope they do.  I know it sucks seeing your baby(ies) like that, if you ever have questions or anything, let me know!

  • Thanks girls!

pea-kay - the pedi did say specifically RAD.  She said they don't diagnose it as 'asthma' until they are older than two.  I am lucky only one of my girls has it (so far).  I couldn't imagine dealing with it with three!

2shihtzus - Right now she will be getting nebulized with albuterol until at least next week.  I have a feeling we are in it for the long haul (I've had asthma my whole life too).  I will definitely let you know if I have any questions.  Thanks :)

  • It is possible she'll outgrow it.  We had RAD diagnosis frequently throughout the past 2 years.  Joey needs albuterol via nebulizer every 6-8 weeks depending on when he gets a virus/cold.  Now we are doing preventative meds for "asthma" since the pedi does not like how frequently he's needing the rescue med and thinks at this point it will be termed "asthma" and not RAD anymore.  Nathan on the other hand had bronchiolitis and RAD diagnosis less frequently and seems to be outgrowing it.  Hoping your little lady goes too!
