I have thrush, but pedi doesn't want to treat LO...

I am being treated for thrush.  Using Nystatin and was given 2 pills of Diflucan to take 3 days apart.  Called the pedi office and explained my situation.  They asked if LO is showing signs in her mouth, to which I answered "no."  Because of her age, and since she is not showing signs, they do not want to treat her at this time.

I've always read that we both have to be treated in order to beat thrush.  Please tell me you have heard this before.  We've never had any problems with our pedi in the two years we've had my oldest...

TIA!

Re: I have thrush, but pedi doesn't want to treat LO...

  • We have the opposite issue. DS is being treated but my OB said I don't need to get treated separately unless I get symptoms. Right now we are swabbing his mouth with Nystatin and I am using a cotton pad to apply it to my nipple and areola amount, which is what the pedi at the after hours place said to do. DS is clearing up and I haven't had any symptoms.

That's weird that they don't want to treat your LO though.

  • I had it when DS1 was about 1.5 yrs, and he didn't have symptoms and didn't get treated. They did give me a prescription for him if he did get it, though.
    DS1 - Feb 2008

    DS2 - Oct 2010 (my VBAC baby!)

  • I had a horrible case of thrush, but actually chose not to treat my daughter. She also did not show any symptoms, and was miserable every time I tried to give her the medicine from our pediatrician.

All I used was the Nystatin ointment on my nipples CONSTANTLY. I know it says to use it once every few hours, but it is totally okay to use more than that. It is also okay if your LO gets some in her mouth. I used it before and after breastfeeding, along with religiously changing my bras and shirts.

    HTH and good luck!

  • I'm in the same boat. I am being treated with only diflucan twice a day for three days then once a day for two weeks. My pedi will not treat my LO because she has no symptoms however my OB said that the diflucan will be passed to her since I EBF so it should help her as well.
  • I've heard thrush can be easily passed back and forth.  But I'm not sure if you can prevent it.  Meaning your ped might be right in not prescribing something for LO before she needs it.  I had the opposite problem.  Ped gave DD nystantin and told me to use lotrimin on myself but I haven't seen the OB about it.  I never thought about using LO's meds on myself.  I just didn't feel like calling the OB about one more little thing and the lotrimin seems to have helped.  The white spots are all but gone and it doesn't hurt as badly to nurse now.

  • Our family doctor also did not want to treat DD in the absence of symptoms. It turned out fine and I cleared up with just treating me. Keep on top of checking regularly and watch out for any belly aches as well.  Feel better. Thrush sucks!

ETA: And ditto Wundervull. Rinse your breasts, dry them and put Nystatin on after every single feeding.
