Multiples

Hi new to this board and a ? About Drs.

Hi we found out last week that we are expecting twins. Exciting and overwhelming! I am still seeing my RE and I see my OB for the 1st time tomorrow. My question is should I be seeing a Dr. Other than my OB or in addition to my OB? I really have no idea what to do. Thanks for any information.

Re: Hi new to this board and a ? About Drs.

  • I also saw a perinatoligst in addition to my OB. He just monitored me because I was instantly a high risk pregnancy according to my OB. Congratulations, on the twins, it's a ton of fun!

  • I saw both my OB and a Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM) specialist. My MFM does not deliver babies but made a lot of treatment decisions during my pregnancy.

  • I only saw my OB but, I have all the confidence in the world in her.  There was a peri in the group so, if there would have been an issue he was there.

  • I saw my OB only. Same as PP, though, I was totally confident in my group's care. I know they would have referred me to an MFM if needed, but I (thank goodness) had a very easy pregnancy.

  • I started out with only a MFM, due to my pregnancy originally being triplets.  He also delivered babies, so I would have stayed with just him, but we moved halfway through my pregnancy.  I then started seeing an OB and a MFM in our new town.  My OB was highly experienced with multiples, but I felt better having an extra set of eyes on my babies with my MFM.  I had a lot of complications, and saw my OB every two weeks and my peri every two weeks, so I was seeing someone almost every week.  If your OB does not deal with a lot of twin pregnancies, I highly recommend seeing a MFM also.  And even if they do, I would still consider it.

  • After being released from my RE I just saw my OB.  Like several PP he had mulitples expierence. I trusted him and knew that he would refer me if there were any concerns.  At about 18 weeks we moved states and since I did not have an OB that I know I am now going to a perinatal practice.  They provide total care, so I do not need to go to mulitple doctors.

  • I had one appointment with a peri, otherwise it was completely managed by my OB, who had multiples experience. (and is a twin)

  • Hi and welcome!

Also - GO BLUE and GO WINGS!!  (I'm a U of M alum and am originally from the Detroit area).

Anyways, after being released from my RE, I saw an OB only, but he had extensive experience in multiples so I felt completely comfortable with him.  I didn't start to see an MFM until I started having some issues around 25ish weeks.  I still primarily still saw my OB, though (MFM visits once a month except for daily visits the two times I was hospitalized).

    This is my current situation.

    Congrats and welcome!

  • Thanks everyone! I love my OB, but I'm not sure about her experience with twin pregnancies. I guess that'll be a question to ask tomorrow. For those that did see a Peri or MFM, did you get a recommendation from your OB?

  • I think it depends on your confidence with your OB. I felt really taken care of at my OB's so I didn't feel a need to see a high risk dr. They monitored my cervix via. u/s every few weeks, saw me more frequently than people who were PG with a singleton, and had experience with twin pregnancies. I went into PTL at 31 weeks and felt they did everything "right" to treat it - they stopped my labor and I made it to 37.5 weeks! Looking back I feel I made the right choice to stick with just my OB. But I also had di/di twins which are the lowest risk. If I had anything else I'm sure they would have referred me to a peri or MFM.

I was referred to the one my OB works exclusively with, based on the hospital my OB delivers at.  I love my MFM - he's fantastic.

  • Hi, and welcome to the board and congrats.

     I'm in the Detroit area.

Do you know what hospital you want to go to?  Royal Oak Beaumont or Troy Beaumont or St. John Providence?  U of M?   Hutzel in Detroit?  Each hospital has its own set of perinatologists (MFM) doctors.  So I would pick which hospital you like best and then look for a dr. that practices there.

My OB delivers out of Royal Oak and Troy. So I'd be ok with either. I know Royal Oak has the level 3 NICU. So that may be a better option. I had DD at Roayl Oak, not that it matters.

  • Beaumont Royal Oak has the higher level care NICU.  They take babies born at any gestational age.

Troy Beamount can only take babies born after 28-29 weeks. If you have a baby born there and they can't handle situation, they transfer baby to Royal Oak.

A friend had her twins at Troy Beaumont unexpectedly and luckily did not have to transfer to Royal Oak.  She was right at 28-29 weeks when she delivered. She loved it at Troy. Babies were in NICU for awhile and she was very happy with dr. and nurses and care received.  I was in NICU to see her babies and it is very nice.

I don't know if the Royal Oak high risk drs. deliver at both locations or if there is a set of MFM for each location. sorry.
