diaper Rash

so we have our first case of diaper rash and I wanted to see if you all have any really good tricks.  It started a few days ago so we did a bath, have been letting DD#2 lay naked to air out, using zinc oxide, and even started using cotton balls instead of wet wipes. It got better and was almost gone and then all of a sudden is back worse than before, it is bright red.

What zinc oxide creams do you like?  Any other things we can try?

TIA

Re: diaper Rash

  • Last week DD had a really bad diaper rash, the worse we've had to deal with yet. I did everything that you've been doing so I called the doctor, the only they said to do that I wasn't trying was putting corn starch on her bottom, they said it really absorb the moisture. But, I stand by my Balmex, I cake it on after she's done air drying.

  • Aquaphor has worked really well for us. At our last OB appt, pedi said we can actually use tough actin tenactin (yes the athlete's foot stuff) when it starts to break skin. I don't know if I actually will, but she said it works everytime.

  • Mix pure cornstarch w/ mylanta or maalox until it forms a thick paste. Avoid baby wipes (even the unscented/sensitive skin types) and just use a wet washcloth or soft paper cloth until the redness is gone. I also found making sure DDs were totally dry before applying the paste helped--I blew my hair dryer on low/cool until their buns were completely dry.

FYI if your LOs skin breaks, it's best to take them in for a Rx-strength diaper cream. I can't remember the name of the one I ended up having to use, but it prevented infection. The mylanta/cornstarch (as crazy as it sounds!) works amazingly well!

  • I think air and no diaper is best for a mild case.  Put down some towels to save the mess.  We had it really bad once and the pedi suggested mixing milk of magnesia, corn starch and olive oil.  It cleared it up right away.

  • I swear by cornstarch baby powder--I use it all the time and neither of my girls have ever had a bad rash. You can also ask your pedi for a prescription for a cream called "Happy Hiney"--they gave us some in the NICU and it works wonders for really bad rashes.
  • I swear by Dr Smith's.  It's over the counter, but more pharmacys keep it behind the counter.  If this stuff doesn't clear it up, go to the doc to make sure it's not a yeast infection.

     Good luck.

  • I also cake on the Aquafor. When there is a bad diaper rash I literally slather it on and by morning it is gone.

  • Our Pedi has us wash them with safeguard soap, air dry and then use a mixture of neosporin, athelete's foot cream, and hydrocortizone (clear).  I know it's weird but we mix it and keep it in a tub and it's worked when they've had a really bad one with broken skin.  GL!
