Hi and welcome to the board. I don't think SF is too far for dr appt but if you go into labor at 6 am, I would not want to be in the car in stop and go traffic while in labor. That would be my big concern.
Where do (or did you) deliver, and your experience?
We live in the East Bay now but I love my dr at CPMC, I tried a dr in Walnut Creek but am not a fan. Am I silly to keep my dr in SF?
i delivered at JMMC in WC .. i loved it.
you're not silly for wanting to keep your SF ob at all .. what i would do is see if they have hospital privileges at any east bay hospitals so you don't have to travel far for a hospital and its far easier for an ob to travel across the bridge for that reason that a pg lady.
that said, i was the crazy pg lady who worked in marin and lived in east bay (hospital and ob in WC - Christine Riley FANTASTIC doc btw) and people were nervous about me and my hr+ commute. i figured worst case scenario, i get a CHP escort to the hospital :P i ended up working until the day i was induced - l/d at work 7/13 and the next afternoon i was holding my lil girl.
Love - a wildly misunderstood although highly desirable malfunction of the heart which weakens the brain, causes the eyes to sparkle, cheeks to glow, blood pressure to rise and the lips to pucker - Author Unknown
Depends like the ladies said above see if they can have priviledges in east bay hospitals and if they are ok with that. I have Kaiser and love my ob in wc.

I was living in Brentwood when I delivered at Stanford. It was 75 miles and we did it in rush hour. That part was fine. I didn't repeat that again and delivered at ValleyCare in Pleasanton the second time. If you love CPMC and want to stay with that, go for it. I switched because I didn't like the experience at Stanford and found a doc at VC that I loved.
