Out of breath?

Only 10 weeks .. and in very good active shape prior to being pregnant. Now I am out of breath just walking up the stairs in my house .. WTH? Please let me shortness of breath is not that uncommon?

Re: Out of breath?

  • Definitely not uncommon. I was so short of breath with DS1 and starting to feel it already again. But for sure mention it to your doc.

  • This happened to me last time and I feel it starting with this pregnancy.

  • Thanks ladies for the reassurance! My job is very active, and I am feeling so stress that this shortness of breath is starting so early on. Definitely going to mention to my doctor!
  • I heard it is a common symptom during pregnancy but I didn't think it was going to occur this soon. It began last week when I turned 8 weeks and it's getting worse. I have an appointment on Wednesday and I'll be sure to mention it to my OB.

  • Yep.  It's really annoying.  Laundry day has become almost impossible to do now -- involves two flights of stairs multiple times over the course of the day.  I've actually had to stop after one flight to catch my breath before taking the second set.

  • I'm only 6 weeks and the shortness of breath started last week.  Really sucks walking from the parking garage to work in the morning!  Hope we are all able to kick it soon!
  • Its the progesterone levels. It tells your brain to breathe deeper to get more oxygen for baby. I am a teacher and some days I talk for 30 minutes straight. A few times I've had to stop and gasp for air. Its not about fitness.

  • Definitely happening! I was at Sam's shopping and just walking or picking up stuff got me short of breath...even when i was 5 - 6 weeks just getting dressed would.

  • Great to see this post because I was wondering the same thing.  I am pretty physically fit, so I knew it had to be something pregnancy-related. My heart races and I can barely catch a full breath just sitting on the couch sometimes!  If I try and get up too quickly, I feel like I may pass out as well.  Just doing yoga, if I bend over, then come up, I feel really light headed and out of breath. My sister experienced the same thing in the beginning.
  • I think it's quite common -- I've been experiencing it too.  I even mentioned it to my doctor at my appointment last week and she didn't seem concerned -- unless it gets really severe.

It's a very odd sensation though, I agree.  I was in fairly good shape before getting pregnant and now like you, I can't even get up the stairs without feeling like I just jogged a couple miles.

  • I also get shortness of breath from just even walking up the stairs.  Then I read in a pregnancy book that your diaphram moves up 4 inches in early pregnancy and this is what attributes to being out of breath, so I guess  it is very common!
