Newbie alert! Maybe a naive question, but I can't help wonder...since prefolds are so economical, why don't most people use them longer? Would I be silly to plan to use prefolds and covers for the entire first year? I am incredibly frugal and love the idea of saving money. That being said, I realize some of the AIOs and fitteds are incredibly cute and hard to resist. Just looking for some perspective!
Re: Prefolds
So I have only been at this for about 8 weeks, but here is my take. I thought I would HATE prefolds because you have to fold them, use a snappi, use an extra cover, etc. But I knew they worked well with the newborn phase so I bought 1 dozen infant size and 2 dozen smalls and a few covers. Then I bought a variety of pockets and a buch of used AIOs. Turns out I LOVE prefolds! I wish I had just done prefolds. But I think that the others will be better for daddy, grandparents, and sitters because there really is no learning curve, they work just like disposables.
So to answer your question, no it is not crazy to use prefolds only in my opinion
Before J. was born, I expected to use pockets for daytime and night after the NB stage. But we hated them. I hated stuffing them. And the microsuede of the BG gave J. a rash. And we couldn't stuff them enough for nighttime without there being leg gaps, so they always leaked at night.
Anyway, J. is now almost 15 months, and always wears PFs during the day. We use fitteds at night. I have no plan to add pockets/AIO or any other type to our diaper stash. The PFs are working great! Now we don't even snappi...we just trifold in the cover and go!
Oh, and fwiw, PFs have been DH's favorite type since day 1 (and we cd'ed from the very beginning).
So yes, you can use PFs for the first year (although they may not be absorbent enough for nighttime) and beyond!
This. We switched to BGs at about 4 months because of the wiggle factor. We used those until DS was PTd.
