boardbook or hardcover....

which do you prefer when buying books for your toddler if the book comes in both forms??

Re: boardbook or hardcover....

  • Hardcover for most books, but it is hard to find them.  We probably have 600 or so childrens books and most of them are hardcover and paperback, only a handful of them are board books.

  • I love the board books and a majority of ours are that. With the hardcover it's just too easy for DS to rip the pages.

  • I'm slowly switching now that ds is 3 I'm starting to tend more otwards hardcover now he respects his books and treats the properly - for the most part.

  • I prefer board books (DS turned 2 in August), but we have a lot of paperback/hard cover too.  I like that he doesn't have to be 100% supervised with board books.

PP...600 books??? dang. You have quite the collection!!

  • Boardbook for my youngest but mainly hardcover.  I have several in softcover though that are fine.  DS is gradually getting to the place where we can do the hardcover as he is more gentle with them.

  • We do both, the boardbooks are down so DS can read on his own, hardcovers are up high and we read the together since he is a little rough.

  • We have both, but I prefer hardcover for our nighttime stories.  Boardbooks are great for her to look at on her own and throw in the diaper bag to take with us, but they aren't long enough for story time.  Since we have a ton of boardbooks, I'm now focusing on or hardcover "library".
  • We have all kinds, board, hard, & paper. The board books are on a bookcase where DS always has access to them. The others are in a bookcase in our room for supervised viewing and reading since he does like to shred them periodically.

Ya we have a pretty good childrens library going on!  I would say I have a problem, but there is nothing wrong with too many books!

My mom and dad just did a huge clean out at there house because they are moving soon and my mom had all of the books from when we were kids (she was a book junkie too) and she kept a lot and she gave the rest to me and my brother who has kids.  I got probalby 150-200 just from my mom and dad.

Also we do a lot of second hand shopping and I always get books.. everytime we go to goodwill we get books!  I have gotten the majority from there and I can get 20 or so books for $10 or go to the store and get one book for $10.. So usually we choose to go get more... But DD also has several books that we bought new..those are mainly the boardbooks that we have.

She has her own reading nook in her room (it is the second closet in her bedroom) and we keep all the board books in the closet/reading nook and the rest in her room on shelves.  DD is really gentle with books so that helps, one of my biggest pet peeves is when kids destroy books like coloring in them and ripping them on purpose, small babies don't know any better but DD is 2 and she knows better.. My mom has the same pet peeve as me too.

  • Okay so I counted because I was curious how many children's books we had not quite 600.. the magic number at this point is 496 books (I also have a small box of chapter books that I didn't count).
