2nd Trimester

So my doctor doesn't know the sex of my baby...and...

I had the 22 weeks check up today.  My baby's heart rate was 149:)

We are team green, so I was afraid that someone might say "he" or "she".  As soon as I saw the nurse, I asked if they keep the information about the sex of the baby in my chart.  She said it's included in the leven 2 ultrasound result, so it's possible the doctor remembers if it's a boy or a girl, but she usually doesn't care.  They don't write it down anywhere they can see, so if they want to know, they'd have to go look in the ultrasound result in the computer.  The nurse herself didn't know.  My doctor certainly didn't know, or at least she didn't remember.  Good, we stayed team green:)

However, there were a couple of more things she didn't remember.  One of them was that I have a history of preterm labor.  She was the one who sent me to the perinatologist because of it, therefore I had a level 2 ultrasound there instead of her usual technician.  But, she asked me today, "you don't have a history of early labor or anything, right?"...  I said, "yes...I do..."  And she was like, "Oh..." I had to tell her what the perinatologist said, and I'm getting another ultrasound next week just as a precaution.  Hmmm...

My doctor doesn't come in with my chart or nothing to write down any information with, so I'm starting to wonder if she remembers I'm Rh-...

  • Best to remind her of any concerns you may have...

  • I would have a really hard time trusting a doctor that couldn't remember stuff like that.  She should at least bring in your file so she can make notes and refer back to what you guys talked about previously.

At our doctor's, they have a complete computerized system so the doctor enters her notes as we're talking and can pull up any tests or results and look at them.  That makes me feel safer since I know that she won't accidentally forget anything important when it comes to my care.

  • That's awful. Is it a large practice were you don't see the same doctor each time? I can understand not remembering every detail of every patient but at least have some idea of who you are seeing.  If you are planning more children in the future, I'd definitely start looking for another doctor
  • One thing I learned this year when my dad was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer is that if your gut tells you something is not right and/or you don't feel right with your medical professional - find a new one. You and your health and now the health of your unborn child are too precious to waste time with someone who doesn't remember you.

Just as an example - I had my first pre-natal appt with my dr on Wednesday and we were talking about labor and delivery and I said something about tearing and he said yes, we don't want you to tear the way your mom did with you (same OB delivered me 27 years ago). I think that's pretty good going for being over 27 years ago.

  • Like a PP, my office also uses all computerized records. When I go back to see the nurse and do urine, BP, weight, etc she enters it right away into the computer at her desk and when my midwife comes in, she has a netbook with her that she enters all the notes and info as we talk. She sometimes forgets things and will ask me if she's given me such and such results yet but can bring them right up on her netbook and go over them with me in the room. She's also part of a bigger practice so if I have to see another widwife, or one of the OBs, they can access that same data.

I would definitely feel a little off if the nurse/Dr didn't remember or have easy access to my info, especially for something important like anything that may cause complications later (like pre-term labor).

  • Yes...  My doctor came highly recommended by a super nice friend of mine, and she has good online reviews, but I wasn't super impressed by her when I met her for the first time.  Then again, she wasn't bad or anything, so I decided to stay with her.

I was talking to my friend today, and she told me to switch the doctors.  She loved her ob and so did her 13 friends, so I called to see if I can get in...we'll see...
