2nd Trimester

2nd time moms...snuza, heard of it?

I was watching The Doctors yesterday and they mentioned this item that monitors baby movements and if no movement vibrates at 15 seconds and I think sets an alarm for parents at 20 seconds.

Anyone use it? Think its a waste of money or something valuable?

I suppose it supposed to assist in limiting SIDS.

  • Movement monitors like Snuza and AngelCare may give some people peace of mind, but according to the AAP, they do not reduce the risk of or prevent SIDS.  If you actually needed to monitor your baby's breathing you would need a medical grade monitor from your pedi.  I think it's a waste but some people think it's worth it because it makes them feel better.

  • I agree with PP. I think its just one more way for companies to prey on new parents with the idea it can prevent sids. Waste of money.

  • We bought the angel care monitor before DD was born... we used it maybe once only because we found it to be a pain to get it set perfectly to where it was sensitive enough to pick up breathing, but not pick up vibrations in the house (i.e. washer and dryer), and sometimes it would go off because it wasn't sensitive enough. We ended up just turning off the movement sensor part of it and leaving on the sound part, like a regular monitor.

    That's what I've heard too.

  • I have also heard that they produce false alarms a lot, which obviously scares the crap out of you for no reason.  I go with the standard sids prevention... fan in the room the baby is sleeping in, pacifier if they will keep it in (mine wouldn't), baby on back no matter how much they "love" sleeping on their tummy and NO smoking around baby.  If you do all this you are really doing the most you can.

  • My mother in law just mentioned this to me the other day.  I looked it up online, watched the video, and read the reviews.  It has 4.5/5 stars in the reviews.  I will definitely be getting one of these for each baby.  I think it's a great idea.  Based on the way they explain it working, I believe it would work to let you know if there's an issue.   My spouse and I are both nurses and believe this is a great idea.

As for false alarms, there's really no way to prove if it was false.  How do you know that your baby wasn't having an apnea episode, but then started breathing again?  I'd rather have a false alarm at 3 am then wake up to a dead baby.  If this prevents that, then it's totally worth it.  It's my opinion that this would lower chances of SIDS risk-- I'm on board!
