2nd Trimester

GBS @ 16 weeks?

I have been meaning to post this for a couple of weeks and just now got around to it.  After my 16 week appointment (I'm 18 weeks today not 20 like my ticker says), I got a phone call from my doctor saying that GBS "showed up" in my urine and that I needed to go on antibiotics.  I tested positive when they did the swab test with my daughter and went through IV antibiotics during delivery, but I hadn't heard of anyone being put on them in the middle of pregnancy.

I did some research and freaked myself out a little bit, but it's nice to be able to feel the baby move and feel relatively confident that s/he's okay.

Just curious if anyone has heard of this before.

  • I am interested in the other ladies answers too. I got a call a week after my 13 week appt and told I had a bladder infection and to go pick up penicillin at the pharmacy and take for a week.

Today at my 17 week check up my OB told me no it was not just a bladder infection and I too had GBS show in my urine both last time and today. She gave me a booklet that in my opinion was worthless. I have learned more on here than the information she gave me.

But she did tell me there is no point in taking penicillin again cause as it was still there 3 weeks later after the first course of drugs because 1 in 3 women has it live down there and will just regrow. So I will need IV drugs after my water breaks before delivery.

  • I was dx with GBS about 8w into my first pregnancy with DD after a urine sample. Usually if you are colonized it will show up in your urine, for most mom's it doesn't and that's why they do the swab test around 36 or whatever weesk.

I was on abx for 10 days and it came back about 10 weeks later. It's pretty common also easily dealt with and won't cause complications unless it goes untreated. Since you've been treated you'll be okay but you will have to be on a heploc or something in labor to get two full doses of abx while in labor.

GBS in the urine means you are colonized.  If it's there in large amounts, then the doc may treat it so that you don't get a kidney infection. Regardless of how much GBS grows, it means you get penicillin in labor.  Not when your water breaks, when you present in labor (which may be before the water breaks).  You don't need to get a vaginal swab at 35-37 weeks since you will already get treated in labor.  Beyond that, it's not a big deal.

  • Yeah, penicillin in labor or during pregnancy would be great except I'm allergic. That caused big problems when I had my daughter as it was resistant to what I'm given instead.  The silly hospital nurse wouldn't believe me when I told her that and tried to show her my paperwork, so she gave me the drug my GBS was resistant to anyways.  Consequently, labor had to be stalled 6 hours and I was given something so strong my arm burned as it was going in.  Lovely.
